Washington police continue investigation into human remains
Washington police confirmed that human remains found in the city Sunday were skeletal, and that investigators are still working to determine the identity.
Police posted a press release from Washington Chief Steve Devenney to their Facebook page Monday afternoon. According to the release, at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, police were called to the GetGo on Wylie Avenue to speak to a woman who claimed she found a human skull nearby.
Devenney said in the release that officers then found skeletal remains in a “secluded wooded area” behind 150 Terrace Ave.
According to Devenney, it is currently being treated as a criminal investigation.
“This does not mean a crime has occurred. I repeat, this does not mean a crime has occurred. This is simply this department’s standard procedures when given this type of incident,” Devenney said in the release.
Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco issued a report Sunday that said the death does not appear to be suspicious. According to Devenney, investigators have yet to determine the race and gender of the remains. Warco’s office continues to work to identify the individual and how the person died.
