Bentworth honors veterans with display
The Bentworth School District created a majestic display to honor veterans on Veterans Day.
Students and staff collaborated to create a massive, 74-by-40-foot U.S. flag that they painted on a hillside on the school grounds.
The flag, which is visible from the road and by air, is a symbol of patriotism, community, and respect for those who have served, said Bentworth Superintendent Scott Martin.
The project was a team effort by Bentworth students. The Bentworth High School Physics class took the lead by mapping out the precise coordinates needed to ensure the gigantic flag’s proportions were perfect.
Once the layout was complete, members of the Student Council and STEM Club, along with the maintenance department, painted the red, white, and blue stripes and added the word “Veterans” to the fence that borders the field.
Bentworth Elementary students also contributed. The fourth-grade class attended a lesson at the school’s flagpole, where they learned about the history, symbolism, and significance of the American flag. Following the lesson, the students helped place 168 stakes around the area, each bearing the name of a veteran who is a relative of a Bentworth student.
“As the flag now waves across the hillside, it stands as a lasting tribute to the courage, service, and sacrifice of veterans and as a shining example of what can be accomplished when a community comes together,” said Martin.
