Investigators have identified a person of interest after a teenager was shot in Monessen Tuesday afternoon.

According to Melanie Jones, the public information officer for the Westmoreland County district attorney’s office, the shooting occurred around 4:20 p.m. near the intersection of Rostraver Street and Linden Avenue.

The 16-year-old victim was hospitalized and is expected to survive.

Though Monessen police and county detectives have a person of interest in custody, as of Wednesday afternoon no criminal charges had been filed.

The shooting occurred not far from Monessen Elementary Center. Dr. Robert Motte, the superintendent of Monessen School District, posted to his Facebook page that the district would be using a flexible instruction day on Wednesday “out of an abundance of caution.”

“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and reassess conditions tomorrow. Updates will be shared with families as soon as possible,” Motte wrote.

Additional information was not immediately available.
