2000 Turkeys heading into home stretch
2000 Turkeys, which for 41 years has provided Thanksgiving dinners for Washington County families in need, is heading into the home stretch, and there is still time to help.
Range Resources Corp. will host its annual 2000 Turkeys Food Drive in Canonsburg and downtown Washington on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Range is partnering with the United Way of Washington County and 200 local high school students to collect money and non-perishable food.
Donations to 2000 Turkeys, in partnership with Food Helpers of Washington County, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and City MIssion Boxes of Love, make sure that families struggling with food insecurity can enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with their loved ones.
During the food drive, Range will distribute 2,000 rubber turkey ducks, an homage to the thousands of small and large rubber ducks that appeared along Pike Street in Canonsburg in October. A thousand will be passed out in Canonsburg and another thousand will be distributed in Washington.
“This year, we thought we’d piggyback on the positive momentum that was created during the Canonsburg duck phenomenon. If donating to this important cause doesn’t put a smile on your face, we thought receiving a rubber turkey-duck certainly would,” said Laural Ziemba, 2000 Turkeys board member and Director of Affairs for Range.
The Observer-Reporter, which along with WJPA Radio sponsors 2000 Turkeys, will distribute free O-R newspapers at both sites.
To date, the 2025 campaign has raised $120,000, and thanks to generous donations from individuals, families, businesses, and organizations, 2000 Turkeys is getting closer to its goal of providing dinners for more than 19,000 people.
“The need is great this year. The cost of turkey is increasing, things are expensive, and our plea goes out to the community to step up and help your neighbors,” said 2000 Turkeys board Chairman Dave Rhome.
On Thursday, representatives from Pennsylvania American Water Co. and the Lions Club donated $10,000.
“This is a great tradition,” said Brent Robinson, External Affairs Manager for PAWC. “Nineteen thousand folks with food insecurity will have Thanksgiving dinner. We love to do this every year.”
All donations, small or large, make a difference.
“Those $25, $50 and $100 checks add up,” said 2000 Turkeys board member Jacob Knizer.
To make a donation, please make a check payable to 2000 Turkeys and mail to 2000 Turkeys, P.O. Box 2000, Washington, Pa., 15301.
