Washington County jail laundry room damaged in fire
Washington County will look for another facility to do the jail’s laundry after a dryer caught fire Monday night.
According to a Washington County 911 supervisor, emergency crews were called to the jail at 100 W. Cherry Ave. at about 10:30 p.m. Monday. The fire was contained to the laundry room.
County Commissioner Nick Sherman described it as a “lint and electrical fire” that started in one dryer and spread to a second.
Sherman said the damage was mostly contained to those two machines, but the room is not usable. The prison board discussed options for laundry at its meeting Tuesday morning.
“We are going to see if our neighbor to the north, Allegheny County, who has a massive laundry facility, if they would be willing to do our laundry,” Sherman said.
If the Allegheny County jail is not able to help, Sherman said the county will look for an industrial laundry facility.
According to 911, fire departments from Washington, South Strabane and North Strabane responded to the fire.
