A 13-car pileup on the flyover ramp from Interstate 79 to Interstate 70 killed one person Thursday evening.

According to Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco, 64-year-old Jamie Doreen Wiles, of Wheeling, W. Va., was declared dead at the scene.

The South Strabane Fire Department said in a press release that crews were called shortly after 5:30 p.m. to the ramp connecting I-79 north and I-70 west.

According to the fire department, three people were trapped in a vehicle. Warco’s report states that Wiles was a front seat passenger and that the driver had lost control of the vehicle due to icy conditions.

The driver and a passenger in the rear seat were hospitalized with unspecified injuries. South Strabane Fire Department Chief Jordan Cramer said the passengers were transported to Pittsburgh area hospitals.

Multiple others were treated at the scene, but not hospitalized.

According to the fire department, a dog also died as a result of the crash.

Also responding to the scene were fire departments from Amwell, Bentleyville, and North Strabane, and multiple ambulance services including Ambulance and Chair, Canonsburg EMS, Fort Cherry EMS, Rostraver EMS and Southbridge EMS.

The accident is being investigated by state police.
