A three-vehicle crash in North Franklin Township Monday morning resulted in two people being hospitalized.

According to a Washington County 911 supervisor, the accident occurred at about 6:49 a.m. at Route 40’s intersection with Mounts and McKee roads.

North Franklin Township Fire Chief David Bane said the accident occurred when a vehicle pulled out of Mounts Road and struck a pickup truck headed east on Route 40.

The pickup truck then “spun out,” according to Bane, and collided head-on with a garbage truck that was in the turning lane to turn onto Mounts Road.

The man driving the vehicle that struck the pickup truck was taken via helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital. A female passenger was transported to UPMC Washington Hospital.

The specific nature of their injuries was not clear, but Bane described the male victim’s injuries as not being life threatening.

“It should have been worse than what it was. Thank goodness it wasn’t,” Bane said.

No one else was injured in the crash.

Bane said Route 40 was closed for about a half-hour Monday morning.

Also responding to the accident were Canton Township and Claysville fire departments, and Ambulance and Chair. State police are investigating.
