Pittsburgh area hospitals named among region’s best
UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside Hospital has been named the second-best hospital in Pennsylvania in U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings.
The hospital also was named the best in the Pittsburgh metropolitan region, and earned national rankings in 10 areas, including cancer, psychiatry, and rheumatology treatment.
This year’s 37th edition of Best Hospitals, released Tuesday, evaluated nearly 4,500 medical centers across 14 adult specialties and 23 procedures and conditions and recognized top-performing hospitals across the United States based on patient outcomes, including survival rates, preventable complications, and patient experience.
Five other hospitals in the Pittsburgh metro region earned recognition as best regional hospitals, including AHN Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, which ranked third, and St. Clair Hospital, an independent regional hospital in Mt. Lebanon, which ranked fourth.
The top Pennsylvania hospital in the rankings was Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, which also made the national honor roll as one of the top 20 hospitals in the U.S.
Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., received its seventh-consecutive ranking as the top hospital in West Virginia, and was named high performing in three specialties: cancer, neurology and neurosurgery, and orthopedics.
In Pennsylvania, AHN Allegheny General Hospital ranked 18, tied with three other hospitals, and St. Clair Hospital was tied for 23rd.
UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital was ranked seventh in the U.S. for psychiatry, and it was the only psychiatric hospital ranked in Pennsylvania. UPMC Mercy ranked 12th in the nation for rehabilitation, and UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh was named the 14th-best hospital in the nation for obstetrics and gynecology, and the top OB-GYN hospital in Pennsylvania.
Nationally, 505 hospitals were honored as Best Regional Hospitals across 49 states and Washington, D.C.
In the 2026 rankings, U.S. News & World Report introduced regional specialty rankings in four areas: cancer, cardiology – including heart and vascular surgery, orthopedics, and rehabilitation.
“Because most patients choose providers close to home, this year’s debut of regional specialty rankings in cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; orthopedics and rehabilitation gives them an easy new way to evaluate their local options in consultation with their medical providers,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News & World Report.
In the Pittsburgh metro region, the rankings were:

4. St. Clair Hospital
5. Independence Health System Westmoreland Hospital
6. AHN Forbes Hospital
