McGuffey School District Superintendent Dr. Andrew Oberg has resigned after accepting the top job at Greensburg Salem School District.

McGuffey School Board announced Oberg’s resignation at its Aug. 6 meeting, a day after Oberg was hired to lead Greensburg Salem.

The Greensburg Salem School Board hired Oberg on a five-year contract, ending in June 2031, with a base salary of $165,000.

Oberg fills the vacancy left by former superintendent Ken Bissell, who departed the district to take a position at the Fox Chapel Area School District.

McGuffey board President Monique Frye thanked Oberg, who led the school district for six years and has nearly three decades of experience in education, for his service to the district.

The school board is conducting a search for an interim superintendent, and encouraged McGuffey administrators who hold a superintendent’s certificate to notify them if they are interested in applying for the position.

“The board will be diligent in finding an interim or acting superintendent, and then the best fit for the permanent (superintendent) position,” said Frye.

The school district also is searching for a new business manager following the June 18 resignation of Charlene Hobberchalk, who was hired as finance director/business manager at Bethel Park School District.

Hobberchalk was approved to a five-year, $140,000 contract with Bethel Park.

The first day of school for students is Aug. 24.

Oberg’s tentative start date at Greensburg Salem is Aug. 18, but Frye said, “We want to ensure all stakeholders that Dr. Oberg has all intentions of staying with us long enough for a smooth transition.”

The school board scheduled an executive session for Monday to talk with superintendent applicants and “to discuss further steps for filling this role.”
