New AHN Canonsburg Hospital will be built in Southpointe
Construction could start in early 2027
Allegheny Health Network will build a new AHN Canonsburg at Southpointe II business park in Cecil Township.
AHN and Highmark Health announced they are moving ahead with plans to replace the current AHN Canonsburg Hospital, established in 1904 along Medical Boulevard, with a 150,000-square-foot hospital on a 10-acre site located at the intersection of Town Center Way and Mylan Boulevard near Interstate 79.
AHN expects to break ground on the hospital in early 2027, pending approvals, and the facility is slated to open in 2029.
The state-of-the-art, full-service hospital will enable the health system to significantly expand access to a range of comprehensive health care service for Washington County residents and southern Allegheny County communities.
“For more than a century, Canonsburg Hospital and its dedicated caregivers have provided this community with exceptional health care services, and that legacy is foundational to our vision for this beautiful new facility and the critical role it will play in improving the health and wellness of our patients,” Mark Sevco, president of AHN, said in a news release. “We are excited to get started on this important next chapter for AHN in Canonsburg and Washington County and to making world class health care even more accessible to those who live here.”
The new hospital will offer a range of primary, emergency, surgical and critical care services. The campus will also include a medical office building housing physician offices and outpatient clinics.
AHN cited growth in the communities around Canonsburg as one of the reasons the Southpointe site was chosen. According to the most recent census, Cecil Township experienced a 12% population increase, while Chartiers Township saw a 10% increase, North Strabane Township, an 8% increase, and Peters Township, a 4% increase. The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission projects continued population gains in the coming decade.
“The township is thrilled. AHN is a wonderful company, and we are excited to welcome them to Southpointe and Cecil Township,” Cecil Township Supervisor Cindy Fisher said Friday. “We will work closely with them over the next year to get all the permits needed to move forward. Cecil Township is a growing township and there is a lot on the horizon.”
AHN projects the new hospital will create hundreds of additional permanent healthcare jobs when it’s completed, along with hundreds of construction jobs while it’s being built.
About 400 current employees at AHN Canonsburg will transition to equivalent roles at the new facility, with some staff involved in the design of the new hospital.
“We understand that a remarkable patient experience begins with an exceptional working environment for our dedicated physicians, nurses, and caregivers at every level,” said Bethany Casagranda, chief medical officer at AHN. “We look forward to engaging with our care teams in shaping the design and functionality of this new hospital. Their insights and experience will ensure we create a facility that fully supports their talents and capabilities for delivering the highest quality care possible.”
The 104-bed AHN Canonsburg Hospital has operated at its current location in North Strabane since 1983.
No construction cost for the new hospital was provided.
