Power outages reported after storm system rolls through

By Karen Mansfield 1 min read

Southwestern Pennsylvania was hit hard by severe weather Sunday evening.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh issued severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado watches and warnings as strong winds and heavy rain pounded the region, and the storms knocked down trees and caused power outages across Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The storms rolled in around 5 p.m. and ended at about 8 p.m. on Sunday. By 10 p.m., more than 14,600 West Penn Power customers in Allegheny, Washington, Westmoreland, Butler, Armstrong and Beaver counties were without power.

By 6 a.m. Monday, power had been restored to most, with 5,000 remaining without power, including about 500 in Washington County, later in the day.

The NWS said crews will be conducting storm surveys today where the tornado warnings were issued, and are reviewing damage reports sent in by residents.

It is the third heavy storm system to hit the region in the past eight days, according to NWS.
