Two Canton Township residents were displaced Saturday night after a fire destroyed their home.

At about 7:20 p.m., firefighters were called to the 300 block of Edgewood Avenue, according to Canton Township Fire Department Chief Dominic Sicchitano.

Sicchitano said crews arrived within three minutes of receiving the call, but the house was already fully engulfed in flames.

According to Sicchitano, firefighters initially were able to enter through the front door but backed out as conditions quickly worsened.

“Within seconds, we had a major floor collapse in the rear,” Sicchitano said.

He added that second floor collapsed into the first floor, and the first floor into the basement. Nobody was home at the time, but the man and woman who live there are currently staying with family. Sicchitano said the American Red Cross is also providing assistance. The residents were not identified.

The fire was under control Saturday night, but Sicchitano was at the scene Sunday morning as crews tamped down hot spots while the state police fire marshal investigated the cause. It was not immediately clear where the fire may have started.

Canton Township was assisted by fire departments from Washington, South Strabane, North Franklin Township, Chartiers Township and Claysville.
