Development of new Freedom Transit facility underway
Those traveling along Berry Road have likely noticed plenty of activity at the former home of Tower Golf and Amish Touch.
Since December, work has been underway preparing the land at 375 Berry Road, South Strabane Township, for Freedom Transit’s new operations facility.
Sheila Gombita, the organization’s executive director, said crews are preparing the land for construction of the complex. The project will be completed by the fall of 2027.
Freedom Transit purchased the property for $3.2 million in October 2022. The project is expected to cost about $40 million.
According to Gombita, the facility will help extend the life of Freedom Transit’s fleet.
“We will be able to store and maintain all of the vehicles indoors, which will make them last longer,” Gombita said.
She added it will also allow them to fuel the buses on-site, which is expected to save on fuel costs.
“Right now, we can’t store bulk fuel. We’re going to the gas stations like everyone else and pay the full price just like everyone else,” Gombita said.
The operations center will be 80,000 square feet, and also include a bus wash and a training room for dispatch and operations staff.
Freedom Transit’s administrative offices will remain in Washington.
