Peters library hosts ‘Find your Revolutionary War Patriot’ event
The Washington County chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be helping people connect to their heritage this weekend at the Peters Township Public Library.
“Find Your Revolutionary War Patriot” will be held at the library at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Sydney Krawiec, the library’s program and outreach coordinator, said the local chapter of the DAR will help participants use the archival and genealogy tools available to see if they have ancestors who lived through the Revolutionary War.
“We’re really excited to have them share their expertise with the community,” Krawiec said.
The class will be led by Cate Briggs, regent of the Washington County DAR. Briggs says 2026 being the 250th birthday of the United States was part of why she wanted to hold the class.
“Genealogy research is a huge business. A lot of people are getting involved in it. A lot of people are interested in it. And when you couple that with our nation celebrating our 250th, it’s in everyone’s mind, or it should, the amazing sacrifices and service that our patriot ancestors underwent for us,” Briggs said.
Briggs will have a PowerPoint presentation to help walk participants through how to start researching their lineage.
“I’ve been doing this for over 19 years. I’ve learned a lot, and I’m going to share everything I’ve learned of how they can link back to the Revolutionary War patriot,” Briggs said.
She added that she hopes the women participating will want to join the DAR, and the men will be interested in the Sons of the American Revolution.
Briggs stressed that having a “patriot” ancestor does not mean that person was a musket-wielding soldier.
“It can be a man or a woman that did military, patriotic or civil service during the American Revolution,” Briggs said.
When someone joins the Washington County DAR, the organization will conduct genealogical research on their behalf.
“We leave no stone unturned,” Briggs said. “Everybody likes discovering things, and they may discover a lot of ancestors they didn’t know they had. And they’ll discover the amazing stories of their lives.”
Those interested in the “Find Your Revolutionary War Patriot” can register on the Peters Township Public Library website. There are currently four spots still available. The Washington County DAR can be contacted at washcopadar@gmail.com.
“If it fills up and we know that more people are interested, we know the DAR would be very happy to share this information,” Krawiec said.
