A stretch of Locust Avenue in South Strabane Township may remain closed for an extended period of time after it was damaged by a landslide last week.

The state roadway is currently closed between Hudak Hill Road and Interstate 79. Melissa Maczko, press officer for the state Department of Transportation’s District 12, said it could be “closed for some time.”

“At this point, we’re still investigating to see when we can open it,” Maczko said.

PennDOT’s current suggested detour is to take Country Club Road to South Country Club Road, which will take drivers to Pike Street near the I-79 interchange.

According to Maczko, there is no time frame for that section of Locust Avenue to reopen. PennDOT is also still investigating how much the repairs will cost.

“The cost to repair is unknown at this time,” Maczko said.

The landslide occurred during a storm that began Thursday night and lasted into Friday morning. That part of Locust Avenue is directly above Villas on The Green, and a home on Golf Course Drive was damaged by the slide.

Jim Kashery, president of the Villas’ homeowners association, said the homeowner reported the slide at about 2:30 a.m. Friday. Nobody was injured.
