Burgettstown mascot injured during pep rally
A mascot for the Burgettstown Area School District was injured during a Homecoming pep rally at Burgettstown High School on Friday afternoon, and was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.
Smith Township police said a landing zone was set up at Hill Memorial Stadium, the Burgetttown Blue Devils’ football field, to transport the student to the hospital.
In a news release, Burgettstown Area School District Superintendent Dr. Stephen Puskar said the pep rally was stopped immediately after the incident, “emergency medical services were concluded, and students were escorted back to their classrooms.”
“Our thoughts and concerns remain with the student and his family. We also recognize that this incident was distressing for those who witnessed it, and we remain committed to supporting our students, staff, and the family during this difficult time,” Puskar wrote. “We are grateful for the prompt response and professionalism demonstrated by our faculty, staff, and emergency responders.”
The school district did not provide additional information, including the student’s condition, and said the incident is being investigated.
