Lewis P. Fischer
Lewis P. Fischer, 92, of Washington, died Saturday, December 29, 2012, in Humbert Lane Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Washington, following a two-month illness.
He was born December 1, 1920, in Washington, a son of the late George J. and Gertrude Vankirk Fischer.
Mr. Fischer was a 1939 graduate of Washington High School and later attended Penn Commercial Business School.
He was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Washington and played in the church dartball league.
Mr. Fischer enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served with the 2nd Battalion, 423rd Infantry in the European Theater of Operations. He was awarded three Bronze Stars. He was a member of the 106th Infantry Division Association.
He was employed by the city of Washington as a fireman for 32 years, before retiring in 1983.
On July 11, 1950, in Washington, he was married to his wife of 62 years, Jane Dalton Fischer, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Kathryn F. (Mark G.) Wholey of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Gertrude L. Amon of Mononga, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Caroline and Colin Wholey of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two sisters, Margaret Rockwell and Marie Powell, and seven brothers, John, George, Raymond, William, Robert, Kerwin and infant Luther Fischer.
At the request of the deceased, services and entombment in Washington Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to First Lutheran Church, 92 West Walnut Street, Washington, PA 15301.
