Jean Amon-Sexton, 63, of Muncie, Ind., formerly of Washington, died Thursday, April 4, 2013, in Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie.

She was born October 6, 1949, a daughter of Shirley Jean Amon of Washington and the late Lonnie Jack Amon.

She graduated from Washington High School.

Mrs. Amon-Sexton enjoyed computer games, crafts and her family.

Her first husband, David White, is deceased.

She is survived by Teejay Sexton, whom she married in Muncie.

Also surviving are a son, David (Susie) White of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Amy (Chuck) Rench of Muncie; two brothers, Jack (Linda) Amon and Lonnie Dale (Debbie) Amon, both of Washington; grandchildren Cierra and Cheyenne Rench of Muncie and Miranda White of Louisville.

Deceased is a daughter, Tammie White, who died in infancy.

Private services were held in Muncie.

Therese Startare Berry, 97, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Waynesburg and Mather, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013, in Wellspring Health Care Center, Cincinnati.

She was born January 28, 1916, in Washington, a daughter of the late Frank Startare and Alta Pauline Patterson Startare, formerly of Beallsville.

On October 20, 1938, she married Raymond J. Berry, who died January 1, 1999.

She lived much of her life in Mather, then in Phelps, Ky., and then in Waynesburg. She had lived in Cincinnati for the past five years.

Mrs. Berry founded the 4-H sewing club in Greene County.

She was a member of Jefferson Presbyterian Church, where she was the organist. She was also a member of Emerald Chapter 135 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading and sewing and was an excellent cook.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Ice of Cincinnati and Jeanne Schroyer (Fred) of Waynesburg; and a son, Raymond J. Berry (Barbara) of Perkasie.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Karin Galligan (Chuck) of Washington, Timothy Schroyer (Deanna) of Bumpass, Va., Jay Schroyer (Ashly) of Denver, Colo., Joel Schroyer (Courtney) of Waynesburg, Luke Schroyer of Waynesburg; Raymond J. Berry (Tracey) of Perkasie, Marsha Young of Frederick, Md., and Tracey Young of Cincinnati; and eight great-grandchildren.

Deceased is a brother, Hunter Francis Startare, formerly of Beallsville.

Richard Carothers, 87, of Gilmore, Cecil Township, died Friday, April 5, 2013, in Townview Nursing and Rehab Center, Canonsburg.

He was born November 24, 1925, in Beech Bottom, W.Va., a son of the late John and Marie Gerlach Carothers.

Mr. Carothers was an Army private, serving during World War II as a rifleman and military police in France and Germany.

He was a member of Venice Presbyterian Church, life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191, Canonsburg, and United Steel Workers Union.

Mr. Carothers enjoyed tinkering to fix almost anything and was very mechanical. He rebuilt Volkswagen bugs. He loved to travel and visited 20 casinos across the country.

He worked as a crane operator for Universal Concrete Pipe, Presto.

Surviving are his wife, whom he just celebrated 60 years of marriage, Dorotha Carter Carothers of Gilmore; four daughters, Pamela (Dan) Maniecki of Bentleyville, Lorie (Vince) Macioge of Ellwood City, Lisa (Donnie) Garber of Greer, S.C., and Ricki (Greg) Paul of Beaver; nine grandchildren, Richard Horvath, Jennifer (David) Kuntch, Josh, Adam and Emily Franco, Justin and Sarah Garber, Rhyan and Jacquelyn Paul; a great-grandson, Carter Franco; and a brother, Harry Carothers and companion Eleanor Pantelly of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles Carothers and sister Mary Neil.

Edward Allen Carrico, 72, of New Freeport (Springhill Township), died at 4:31 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2013, in UPMC-Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh, following complications from heart surgery.

He was born October 5, 1940, in Johnstown, a son of the late James Piper and Hazel Etna Bachman Carrico.

Mr. Carrico had resided in the Alliance, Ohio, and Marianna areas prior to moving to Greene County in 1967.

He attended Calvary Baptist Church at Lippencott and was a 1956 graduate of the former Bethlehem High School.

Mr. Carrico was a master woodworker and enjoyed making and selling woodcrafts of all shapes and sizes. He also enjoyed playing guitar, bow hunting and traveling in his motorhome.

He was an avid baseball player in his younger years and was invited to, but unable to participate in, the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system.

Mr. Carrico was a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a specialist fourth class.

He was formerly employed as a policeman and an employee of American Steel Corp., both in Alliance, prior to being employed as an electrician for Vesta 5 mine, retiring in 1982. Following retirement, he was employed by Greene Arc as a woodshop instructor from 1985 to 1995.

On September 28, 1961, he married Norma Jean Yorty, who died January 3, 1995. On May 6, 1995, he married Judith Lynn Jacobs, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Edward J., husband of Karen Carrico of Springhill Township and David S., husband of Marivel Carrico of Silverdale, Wash.; a daughter, Connie L., wife of Thomas Yoders of Springhill Township; six grandchildren, Edward J.Carrico Jr., Rachel Marie and David Matthew Carrico, Elizabeth Carrico Skertich, Jeannie Yoders Burns and Tommy Yoders; a brother, Frank, husband of Cathy Carrico of Norwalk, Ohio; and a sister, Betty Robinson of New London, Ohio.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, Dennis Allen Carrico, who died in infancy; a great-granddaughter, Kristen Carrico; two brothers, James and Daniel Carrico; and a sister, Lois Old.

Edward A. “Elmo” Crawford, 58, of Meadow Lands, died Thursday, April 4, 2013, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born February 22, 1955, in Canonsburg, a son of Gladys E. Crawford Demo.

Mr. Crawford was employed at Torrance State Hospital in Blairsville, where he was a residential service aide. He had also worked at Western Center and Mayview State Hospital.

He was a member of SNPJ Lodge 138 in Strabane and AFSCME Local 2344.

Mr. Crawford had served in the U.S. Army.

He enjoyed the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins, camping and scrapping.

On November 13, 1976, he married Nancy Lesjak, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Eric Crawford (Stephanie) of Houston and Edward Crawford of Uniontown; three grandchildren, Alexis and Shane Crawford and Isabella Robinson; two sisters, Edna Miller (Bill) of Charleroi and Mary Lou Roessler (Don) of Canonsburg; an aunt who helped raise him, Wilma Simpson of Eighty Four; and several nieces and nephews.

Cynthia Ann Filbey, 56, of Mather, died unexpectedly Friday, April 5, 2013, in her home.

She was born March 25, 1957, in Uniontown, a daughter of the late James and Gertrude Kohrman Christie.

Mrs. Filbey was a homemaker and a member of Jefferson Baptist Church.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, scuba diving and animals.

Surviving are her husband, Charles A. Filbey, whom she married June 10, 1989; two sons, James Nehls and Stephen Nehls, both of Jefferson; a daughter, Anna Nehls of Brownsville; three grandchildren, Nicky Shoemaker and Devan and Rowyn Snoderly; two brothers, Dave Christie and Jim Christie, both of Uniontown; and a sister-in-law, Bea Christie of Uniontown.

Deceased are two brothers, Bill and Danny Christie; a sister, Nancy Christie; and a sister-in-law, Donna Christie.

Wallace A. McConnell, 89, of Hendersonville, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013, in Consulate Health Care of North Strabane.

He was born September 20, 1923, in Bridgeville, a son of the late Roy and Beulah McConnell.

Mr. McConnell had been employed as a crane support operator for Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp.

He was a member of Fawcett United Methodist Church.

On April 29, 1944, he married Mabel Campbell, who passed away April 5, 2006.

Surviving are a son, Everett (Karen) McConnell of Detroit, Mich.; two daughters, Cornelia Wetherholt of Detroit and Phyllis (Alex) Stankowski of Hendersonville; a brother, Clark McConnell of the state of California; a niece, Donna (Frank) Zuzek of Cecil; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several other nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are a sister, Phyllis McConnell and six brothers, Ira, Thomas, Roy, Harvey, Allan and Jay McConnell.

Alice Blanche Vincent Murphy, 92, of Washington, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013.

She was born January 2, 1921, a daughter of the late Aurel and Blanche Minne Vincent.

Mrs. Murphy was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II.

Hazel Marie Tuttle O’Donnell, 93, a lifelong resident of Cross Creek Village, passed away Thursday evening, April 4, 2013, after a brief illness, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.

She was born March 22, 1920, and recently celebrated her 93rd birthday with pizza and cake with her family members.

A graduate of Hickory High School, Mrs. O’Donnell was a very active member of Cross Creek United Presbyterian Church and served in nearly all capacities of Cross Creek Cemetery for most of her adult life. She was also active within Cross Creek Township, serving as an auditor and on the election board. She was a member of Cross Creek Village Grange and Rebekah Lodge of Burgettstown.

Mrs. O’Donnell enjoyed traveling with her husband and organizing bus trips.

Her husband of 64 years, James E. O’Donnell, preceded her in death December 7, 2003.

Surviving are children, James B. “O.D.” O’Donnell and wife Kim of Burgettstown and Linda O’Donnell Taylor of Columbus, Ohio; three granddaughters, Kelli O’Donnell Alvarez and husband Bob of Langeloth, Jamie O’Donnell of Burgettstown and Tiffany Taylor Himmelreich and husband Eric of Westerville, Ohio; two great-granddaughters, Alyssa Alvarez of Langeloth and Taylor Himmelreich of Westerville; and several nieces and nephews.

Edna Rose Snyder Sluganski, 79, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Carmichaels, died Thursday, April 4, 2013, surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born May 10, 1933, a daughter of the late Elmer Clinton and Lulu Daniels Snyder.

Mrs. Sluganski retired as the owner and operator of South Hills Antique Center and enjoyed gardening.

She shared 26 years of her life with her beloved husband, Frank, before his passing in 1980.

Mrs. Sluganski was the loving mother of the late Randy and John Sluganski; amazing mother-in-law of Sandra Sluganski and devoted grandmother of Randy Sluganski, Jonathan Sluganski, Jacob Sluganski and Bobbi Jo Driscoll-Carlini; great-grandmother of Lia and Alyssa Carlini. She will be greatly missed by her loving sister, Betty Hudson, and sister-in-law Betty Snyder of Fairborn, Ohio, and nieces and nephews Mildred Donato, Carol Modrick, Audrey Coppler, Betty Phillips (Thurman), James Snyder (Heidi), Patsy Maleski (Joseph), Sandra Gwaltney and David Hudson (Denise).

She was a sister of the late Elmer Carl, Edward L., William, James W. and John William Snyder, Ada Reagan, Della Sluganski, Ethel Johnson and Mary S. Coutry.

Lila L. Theakston, 75, of Amity (Lone Pine), formerly of Deemston Borough, died Thursday, April 4, 2013, in UPMC-Presbyterian hospital, Pittsburgh.

She was born October 17, 1937, in Fredericktown, a daughter of the late Kemp Sr. and Gladys Chalfant Lynn.

In 2006, Mrs. Theakston retired from Washington County Recorder of Deeds office, where she had worked as an assistant deputy with more than 21 years of service. She was also a caregiver for the Caring Mission in Washington.

She was a member of the Arms Club, Washington, American Legion Post 175 Auxiliary of Washington, Women of the Moose 22 and Keystone Club.

Mrs. Theakston enjoyed taking care of the elderly, flower gardening, walking and being outdoors.

Surviving are her companion of more than 27 years, Ed Rasel of Lone Pine; two sons, Bill Theakston (Helen Shadursky) of Centerville and Scott Theakston (Kimberly DeTemple) of Millsboro; a grandson, Matthew Theakston of Pittsburgh; a brother, Kemp Lynn Jr. (Mary) of Scenery Hill; a stepdaughter, Chandra Rasel (Brian Patterson) and Chalese Bash (Brian), all of Washington; four stepgrandchildren, Taylor, Tahner, Ava and Eli; four sisters-in-law, Lillian Orum of Ravenna, Ohio, Rose McCoy of Confluence, Joan Adametz of Ravenna and Judy Coyle of Washington; a special friend, Barb Dulaney of Marianna; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Raymond Theakston, died April 15, 1976.

Wilda G. Vernillo, 89, of Midway, died Thursday, April 4, 2013, in McMurray Hills Manor.

She was born December 3, 1923, in Midway, a daughter of the late Merle and Mary Farris Heuston.

Mrs. Vernillo was a teacher at Robinson School and was a member of Midway Methodist Church. She was very active in volunteer work, especially at her church and Meals On Wheels. She was an avid Fort Cherry sports supporter.

Surviving are sons John (Janice) Vernillo of Midway and Donald (Linda) Vernillo of Ga.; grandchildren Michael Vernillo, Lindsay (Jon) Snatchko, Nicholas, Weston (Lindsey) and Andrew Vernillo; great-grandchildren Niko and Kyleigh Vernillo; and nephews Gary, Charles and Terry Havelka.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dominic Vernillo, in 1973; sister Naomi “Punky” Havelka; and brother Merle W. Heuston.

Donald L. “Don” Williams was born in Pittsburgh and passed away March 17, 2013, in Mountain View, Calif., at the age of 84. Although he had medical issues over the last few years, his death was unexpected.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara; children Debby Williams, Donna Williams-Cyr, Tammy Glaser (Chris), Toni Wolfe and John Doebler; granddaughters Katie and Rebecca; great-grandson Ethan; former son-in-law, Ric Cyr; and many stepsiblings, nieces and nephews. His family and friends will miss him.

Deceased are siblings Helen and Tom Williams, Mary Cowden, Tommy Williams, Nada Williams, Tracy Jean Williams and Dona Wolfe.

Mr. Williams served proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton. After his discharge, he completed his education at Waynesburg College with a degree in organic chemistry.

He began his career as a salesman in the East, working for Perkin Elmer, Fisher Scientific and F&M Corp. After Hewlett-Packard Co. acquired F&M in the early 1960s, he returned to California, settling in the Los Angeles area, to help establish an analytical chemistry sales force for HP on the West Coast. In 1973, Mr. Williams was asked to manage one of HP’s first consumer products “stores,” coinciding with the introduction of the HP80 handheld financial calculator. He left HP in 1975 and until his retirement in 1993, held various positions at Exxon Mobil and Apple.

His first and greatest love was his family. The other joys in his life were watching the Steelers and the USC Trojans, golf, coin collecting and cruising.

A celebration of his life with a reception will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1, in Nation Funeral Home Inc., 220 East Lincoln Avenue, McDonald. Following a memorial service at the funeral home at 11 a.m., according to Mr. Williams’ wishes, he will be laid to rest with his family at Robinson Run Cemetery, McDonald.

Clementine Arbutus Wisnosky, 88, of Washington, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013, in her home in Glendale, Calif., with her family by her side.

She was born January 29, 1925, in Washington, a daughter of the late Edward Charles Couts and Florence Mossburg Couts.

Mrs. Wisnosky attended Washington High School and worked for Sealtest Ice Cream Co. in Pittsburgh for several years before her marriage to Eugene Wisnosky.

Surviving are a son, E. Michael (Anne) Wisnosky of Annapolis, Md.; a daughter, Paula Lemmer of Glendale; a grandson, Matthew; two granddaughters, Alexandra and Katarina; and a great-granddaughter, Madelyn Grace.

Deceased are her husband, Eugene Wisnosky, who died January 29, 1987, and brothers Edward, Arthur and James Couts.
