Navy veteran, avid hunter, fisherman

Paul C. Harshman, 90, of Washington, passed from this earthly existence Saturday, August 3, 2013, in his residence, with family and friends by his side.

He was born December 16, 1922, a son of the late John F. and Georgia L. Irwin Harshman, formerly of Buffalo Township, where he resided for his entire life.

In June 1945, Mr. Harshman married Margaret B. Deyell, who passed away in June 2012.

He received the Future Farmers of America Keystone State Degree for his youthful agricultural education experiences. He was a rural mail carrier during his senior year at Trinity High School in 1942.

Naval service took him above the Arctic Circle, to the Mediterranean Sea, and to the Normandy Invasion aboard the USS Augusta. Upon discharge, he farmed and worked in the Pennsylvania and West Virginia gas/oil fields, as well as in light manufacturing/stainless steel supply. He retired in 1987, to fishing, hunting, gardening and woodworking, and later taking care of his wife of 67 years during her long stay in Washington County Health Center.

Surviving are two sons, William C. (Anna Marie) of Tyrone and Kenneth P. (Maria) of Tulsa, Okla.; six grandchildren, Becky Maurio, Jason Harshman, Sarah Harshman, Rachel Harshman Wiggins, Nathan Harshman and Kelsey Harshman; and four great-grandchildren, Georgia, Levi, Dakota and James.

Deceased are a grandson, William Paul Harshman, and a brother, John I. Harshman.

Also surviving are a sister, Ruth E. Newman of Columbus, Ohio; a special niece, Janet Rhodes; a special nephew, John Harshman; and most helpful and adoring neighbors, John and Sue McGary.

Mr. Harshman constantly spoke of dear friends he made during his daily visits to Washington County Health Center.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Hummell and Jones Funeral Home Inc., 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, with the Rev. Thomas Funka officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Washington County Health Center Activities Account, 36 Old Hickory Ridge Road, Washington, PA 15301. Messages of condolence may be left at www.hummellandjones.com.
