WWII vet, chemist was devoted church member
Harry L. Kelley, 89, of Bethel Park, formerly of Washington, died Tuesday, August 5, 2013, in St. Clair Hospital, Mt. Lebanon.
He was born August 10, 1923, in Fairchance, a son of the late James Albert and Marie Elizabeth Koontz Kelley.
Mr. Kelley was a 1941 graduate of South Union High School and a 1949 graduate of Waynesburg College.
He joined the U.S. Navy after high school and served during World War II.
Mr. Kelley was employed as a chemist for Climax-Molybdenum, now Langeloth Metallurgical Co.
He loved bowling and playing golf.
Mr. Kelley was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church, 1793, where he served as deacon, elder and head of ushers.
He was a member of American Legion Post 945, as well as Hickory Lions Club.
On June 1, 1947, in Waynesburg, he married Jean Crayne, who died March 28, 1999.
Surviving are two sons, James L. (Lisa) Kelley of Pittsburgh and Harry L. Kelley Jr. of Rhoadesville, Va.; two daughters, Suzanne K. (Donald) Stewart of Pittsburgh and Barbara K. (Daniel) Motto of Washington; a brother, Ray Kelley of Ohio; two sisters, Vivian Harned of Fairchance and Evelyn Hoak of Uniontown; six grandchildren, Michael Golensky, Erica Farley and Brian, Jessica, Katie and Melissa Kelley; two great-grandchildren, Cayden Skeath and Liam Farley; his in-laws James and Clara Crayne; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a granddaughter, Lauren Kelley; two brothers, James and William Kelley; and a sister, Eileen Pitts.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 8, in First Presbyterian Church, 1793, 100 East Wheeling Street, Washington, PA 15301, with the Rev. Steven Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township.
