James E. Kern

James E. “Binx” Kern, 80, of Canonsburg, passed away at 11:50 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013, in Golden Living of South Hills, following an extended illness.

He was born January 24, 1933, in Strabane, a son of the late Joseph Sr. and Mary Per Kern.

Mr. Kern had been employed at the former RCA plants in both Canonsburg and Meadow Lands and prior to his retirement was employed in the shipping department at the former McGraw-Edison Power Systems in Canonsburg.

He had attended Trinity High School and had been a coach for youth football.

Mr. Kern lived his life in the Strabane and Canonsburg areas, where he was a member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church.

He enjoyed gardening and was a member of SNPJ Lodge 138 and KSKJ St. Jerome Lodge 153, both of Strabane, and Labor Temple of Canonsburg.

On June 11, 1960, he married Julie Telesko, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, James (Alexia) Kern of Perkase and Mark (Dana) Kern of Washington; four grandchildren, Douglas, Claudia, Michael and Avery Kern; a brother, Frank (Helen) Kern of Brookline; a sister, Mary (Andrew) Simko of Canonsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Joseph A. and Richard Kern; and a sister, Wilma Jean Kern.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120, where a blessing service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday August 8, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, Canonsburg, with the Very Rev.
