WWII vet, retired steelworker enjoyed family time

Lyle B. Strawn, 95, of Washington, died Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at 5:30 a.m., in his home.

He was born February 16, 1918, in West Alexander, a son of the late Frank and Estee VanSyoc Strawn.

Mr. Strawn had been employed in earlier years as a steelworker for Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, retiring in 1980.

He was a graduate of West Alexander High School and was a member of American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.

Mr. Strawn enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II receiving the World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars.

On June 16, 1955, he married Rose M. Presto, who died March 30, 1995.

Surviving are a daughter, Annette (Punky) Hower of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren, Richard “Rick” Sensky of Las Vegas, Nev., and Laura (Tom) Austin of Canonsburg; three great-grandchildren, Jessica, Andrew and Stephanie; and a nephew, Richard (Kathy) Strawn of Meadeville.

Mr. Strawn was preceded in death by a brother, Willis Strawn, and a sister, Ruth Hancher.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Warco-Falvo Funeral Home Inc., Wilson at East Katherine avenues, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor, director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director, followed by entombment in Forest Lawn Garden Mausoleum, McMurray.
