Retired crane operator, Army vet was outdoorsman
Edwin L. Smith, 71, of McDonald, died Saturday, August 17, 2013, in Heartland Medical Center, Sebring, Fla.
He was born September 11, 1941, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Edward L. and Doris Wright Smith.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army as military police from 1960 until 1962.
He retired from Local 66 of the Operating Engineers as a crane operator in 2001.
Mr. Smith was a member of Chartiers Lodge 297 F&AM in Canonsburg. He was past master of the former Garfield Lodge 604 F&AM, in McDonald. He was a member of Gourgas Lodge of Perfection, Scottish Rite, Valley of Pittsburgh, Syria Shrine in Pittsburgh, American Legion Post 485 in McDonald, BPOE in Sebring, Moose Club in Sebring, Harter Hall Country Club in Sebring and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Marionville.
He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, golf and snowmobiling.
On December 27, 1960, he married Emma J. “Emmy” Gallo, who died January 28, 2003.
Surviving are two daughters, Tammy Renee (Anthony) Duryea of Port Orchard, Wash., and Kimberly Louise (John) Smith-Aloe; a son, Daniel Brian (Charlene) Smith of Lower Burrell; a companion, Rose Klimas of McDonald; a sister, Patricia (Dave) Bryce of McDonald; a brother, William T. (Donna) Smith of McDonald; seven grandchildren, Megan, Brian, Anthony, Jonathan, Joshua, Madison and Madelyn; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Nation Funeral Home Inc., 220 East Lincoln Avenue, McDonald, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 24. Burial will follow in Robinson Run Cemetery, McDonald.
