St. Mary Parish member

Richard Lawrence Barus, 50, of McDonald, died Friday, December 6, 2013, in his home.

He was born November 24, 1963, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Raymond Barus and Rose Marie Kvarchak Barus.

Mr. Barus was a member of St. Mary Parish and enjoyed bowling and golfing.

He worked as a truck driver for PepsiCo Inc., and prior to that, drove for DHL.

Surviving are his mother, Rose Marie Barus of Lawrence; godmother Mary Barus of Carnegie; several cousins; and many friends.

Deceased are his father, Raymond, who died in 1997; a brother Raymond, who died in 1990; paternal grandparents Lawrence and Blanch Barus; and maternal grandparents Albert and Eva Silicky Kvarchak.

Friends will be received from 9 to 10 a.m., the time of Christian Funeral Mass, Monday, December 9, in St. Mary’s Church, Cecil, with Father Stan Gregorek officiating. Interment will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Scott Township.

Hugh A. “Bo” Danley Jr., 81, of Washington, died at 11:40 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2013, in his home, after being in failing health for the past several years.

Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville. A complete obituary and funeral notice will be published in a later edition.

Korean War vet was avid sportsman

Carl Paul Donolo, 83, of Peters Township, died Saturday, December 7, 2013.

He was the beloved husband of 45 years to the late Helen Petkovich Donolo; loving father of Diane (Jay) Gilliland, Blaise (Linda) Donolo and Valerie Dean; grandfather of Joshua, Joe, Nathan, Maggie, Caleb, Jordan, Annie and Zach; and brother of the late “Don” and Frank.

Mr. Donolo lived the lessons he taught of hard work, honesty, integrity and always doing your best. He treasured time with his family, doing the things he loved: hunting, singing, telling jokes, watching Steelers games and having a good meal.

He was an avid sportsman and a proud veteran of the Korean War.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday in 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, PA 15317. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Tuesday, December 10, in St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg. World War II vet was professional boxer

Joseph A. Elias, 99, died December 2, 2013, in Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, Tucson, Ariz., just two weeks short of his 100th birthday.

He was born December 15, 1913, in Waverly, N.Y., a son of Abraham and Jenny George Elias.

Mr. Elias grew up in Washington and was a 1936 graduate of Trinity High School, where he was an athlete.

In 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Bache during World War II, with an honorable discharge in 1945.

Mr. Elias started boxing in the Navy and later became a professional boxer, known as “Tiger Joe.” He was a sparring partner to world champion Sammy Angott, later going on to train boxers at the Washington YMCA, where he later taught water aerobics.

He enjoyed going to dances and socializing at all fraternal clubs in town, and loved summer picnics.

Mr. Elias worked at Jessop Steel Mill for 34 years as an inspector/surface grinder before retiring.

In 2003, he moved to Arizona to be closer to his children. He enjoyed going to the senior center, where he socialized and played cards with his friends. He loved all sports, dancing and keeping active. He also enjoyed watching boxing, bowling and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On November 24, 2013, he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior and is now in His presence.

Surviving are a son, Joseph Elias of Tucson; a daughter, Jeannine (Fred) Long of Casa Grande, Ariz.; a sister, Mary Amshay; two grandchildren, Nathan (Molly) Elias of Canonsburg and Jenifer (Jason) Conley of New Jersey; four great-grandchildren, Shane and Morgan Elias and Trent and Mallory Conley; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two brothers, Leo and David Elias; and a sister, Anne Ward.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the time of service, Wednesday, December 11, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.

U.S. Army veteran

Guy Guzell, 64, of Strabane, died Wednesday, December 4, 2013, in his home.

He was born November 1, 1949, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Stanley and Caroline Mirisciotti Guzell.

Mr. Guzell was a 1968 graduate of Canon-McMillan High School.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Guzell was a member of Christ Church at Grove Farm, where he was an usher, involved in the men’s Bible study group and Christian leadership.

He was a member of Gold Panning Association of America.

Mr. Guzell was the owner and manager of Pitt Canon, Canonsburg, and The Electric and Watt Not Shop, Meadow Lands.

He enjoyed flea marketing and was a black diamond downhill skier.

Surviving are his wife, Cheryl Weishner Guzell, of Canonsburg, and his brother, Stanley “Butch” (Barbara) Guzell Jr., of Poland, Ohio.

A celebration of Mr. Guzell’s life will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of services, Saturday, December 14, in Sollon Funeral Home Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Sollon, director, with the Rev. Mr. Joseph Cerenzia officiating.

Loved spending time with family

Helen F. Harkins, 83, of Waynesburg, passed away peacefully in her home Friday, December 6, 2013, after a lengthy illness with lung cancer.

She was born November 20, 1930, in Chicago, Ill., to Joseph and Mary Blank.

Her husband, Charles W. Harkins, passed away in 1993.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara (Pat) Wise of Waynesburg and Beverly (Ray) Skwarek of Richland, Wash.; a son, Charles “Bill” Harkins of Washington; six grandchildren, Stephanie (Kevin) Linken, Laura Harkins, Amanda (Derek) Bochna, Ryan (Ashley) Wise, Matthew (Jennifer) Jusino and Lacy Skwarek; two great-grandchildren, Railey and Logan Bochna; two stepgrandchildren, Megan Martin and Laura Skwarek; and a stepgreatgrandson, Philip Belcher.

Mrs. Harkins was one of nine children. Surviving are two sisters, Barbara Bierwirth of Olathe, Kan., and Linda (Bruce) Meeks of Cumberland, Md.

Deceased is a son, Bradley J. Harkins.

Mrs. Harkins was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Waynesburg.

She was a homemaker and worked at Greenway Manufacturing Co. She loved playing bingo, and especially loved spending time with her family. She will be greatly missed.

Friends and family will be received from 4 to 6 p.m., the time of a prayer service, Monday, December 9, in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High Street, Waynesburg. The Rev. Richard J. Thompson will officiate.

Nellie Kayatin, 91, of Coal Center, died peacefully Friday, December 6, 2013.

She was born Friday, April 14, 1922, in Rosmar, W.Va., a daughter of the late Steve and Rose Knatko Bobin.

Mrs. Kayatin was a member of Daisytown Presbyterian Church.

She loved to play cards, bingo and the lottery.

Left to cherish her memory are her two children and their spouses, Brenda and Richard Hopkins of Clover Hill and Steven and Frances Kayatin of Canonsburg; three grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren, Jessica Hopkins-Estis and husband Dennis, Christopher Kayatin and wife Michelle, Dr. Matthew Kayatin, Teresa McAnally and husband Michael and Mandy Bennett and husband Brian; two great-grandchildren, Lilah Estis and Nolan McAnally; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Steve “Steamer” Kayatin, who died December 14, 2012; four sisters, Ann Kuretich, Estelle Robillotto, Helen Cushma and Rose Badalamenti; and two brothers, Michael and Andrew Bobin.

Korean War veteran was W&J employee

Frank Allison Phillips Sr., 83, of East Finley, died Friday, December 6, 2013, in his home.

He was born May 25, 1930, in East Finley, a son of the late Lawrence Phillips and Anne Engle Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War.

For 29 years, he was the assistant manager of the maintenance department for Washington & Jefferson College.

He loved to sing and play his guitar and was an avid deer hunter.

On September 13, 1951, he married Aylea Darma Lilley Phillips, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Frank (Tonya) Phillips Jr. of East Finley; two daughters, Linda (John) Lane of Mechanicsburg and Norma Jean (James) Cessna of Shippensburg; six grandchildren, Stacey (Brian) Barnard, John (Danelle) Cessna, Frank (Lynn) Cessna, Carla (Scott) Alaskey, Matt (Mary) Lane and Amanda (Jason) DeLorenzo; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Harry and Lawrence; and six sisters, Martha, Helen, Mary, Frances, Shirley and Patty.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Deborah Shedlock, 54, of Burgettstown, Hanover Township, died Saturday, December 7, 2013, in Weirton Medical Center, Weirton, W.Va.

August 1, 1955 – December 3, 2013

Robert Joseph Weimer, 58, of Harrisburg, died Tuesday, December 3, 2013, as the result of an ATV accident.

He was born August 1, 1955, in Chicago, Ill., a son of Dr. Joseph Clarence Weimer and Lillian Mokry Weimer of Washington.

Mr. Weimer was a paddock judge for 20 years, employed by Pa. State Thoroughbred Commission. He was known as “Riders up Bob” at the racetrack.

He trained horses and was an avid horseman. He enjoyed mowing grass, cooking out with family and playing Frisbee with his dog, Kimba.

On April 15, 1980, he married Barbara Zug Weimer, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Geoffrey Joseph Weimer of Harrisburg; a daughter, Lauren Weimer of Harrisburg; a brother, Paul Weimer of Washington; and a sister, Karen (Louis Lalama) Weimer of Moon Township.

At the request of the family, there will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, in St. John Methodist Church, Grantsville. Arrangements are being handled by William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington.

Veteran owned local business

John E. Wozny, 67, of Carmichaels, died of apparent heart failure Friday, December 6, 2013, in his home.

He was born December 23, 1945, a son of the late Charles W. and Betty M. Lint Wozny.

Mr. Wozny was a 1963 graduate of Carmichaels Area High School. Following graduation, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked for the FBI and served in the U.S. Army National Guard. Mr. Wozny was called to active duty during the riots following the death of Martin Luther King Jr.

He attended the Bucknell School of Banking.

In the 1970s, Mr. Wozny returned to Greene County, working as a banker for Gallatin Bank, First National Bank, Integra Bank and National City Bank, from which he retired in 1991. He operated a private heating and air conditioning business with his brother following his retirement from banking.

In 1964, he married Geraldine Anne Bedilion Wozny, who died in 1982.

In 1985, he married Jayne M. Woods Streit, who died in 2005.

Mr. Wozny is survived by his companion, Nicole Watson, with whom he made his home in Carmichaels; a daughter, Jonella Williamson and her husband, Ben, of Waynesburg; four sisters, Mary Ann Walker and her husband, Roy Sr., of Virginia, Brenda Jones and her husband, Steve, of South Carolina, Sarah Bussoletti and her husband, Kenneth, of West Virginia and Linda Dulik and her husband, Mike, of Nemacolin; two brothers, Frank Wozny and his wife, Pam, of Greensboro and Mark Wozny and his wife, Debbie, of Crucible; three stepchildren, Edward Streit and his wife, Brandi, of Carmichaels, Daniel Streit and his wife, Betty, of Ohio and Anna Messina and her husband, Kenneth, of Sharon; and several nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren.

There will be no public viewing. At the request of the deceased, all arrangements are private, under the direction of Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, and will be handled at the convenience of the family.
