Donald R. Shipley
Donald R. “Bugs” Shipley, 80, of Roscoe, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, February 20, 2013.
Born October 24, 1932, in Roscoe, he was a son of the late Leroy and Edith Shipley.
After graduating from Charleroi High School in 1950, he went to work at Allied Chemical in Newell. Mr. Shipley then joined the U.S. Army in 1953, where he attained the rank of corporal while honorably serving his country during the Korean War. After serving his country, he worked at Guttman Supply, Union Carbide and Valley National Gas, from where he retired in 1997.
On July 14, 1956, he married his loving wife, Arlene Olesko.
Mr. Shipley was a member of Roscoe Presbyterian Church, where he was a past elder and trustee.
He was actively involved with the American Legion, where he served for many years as commander of Post 801 in Roscoe. He also held the positions of 25th District commander and 25th District chaplain and served on the 25th District staff for numerous years and chaplain for Roscoe Volunteer Fire Company.
In addition to his wife, those left to cherish the many memories of Mr. Shipley are his children, Rae Dawn (Greg) of Eighty Four and Jim (Trisha) of Roscoe; brothers-in-law Andy (Joyce) Olesko, Jim (Theresa) Olesko, Albert (JoAnn) Olesko and Bill (Marilyn) Olesko; sisters-in-law Kathy (Paul) Dendor and Marie Kopacko; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, deceased are his siblings, Leroy and Jack Shipley, Margaret Kruppa, Ruth Foster Zapach, Hazel Nichol, Gert Gregg and Gerry Boscan.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Melenyzer-DuBarr Funeral Homes & Cremation Services Inc., 1008 Furlong Avenue, Roscoe, and 10 to 11 a.m., the hour of service, Monday, February 25, in Roscoe Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Candace Cook presiding. Those attending the funeral service are asked to meet at the church. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. American Legion services will be provided by the 25th District at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
