Lawrence F. Serra
Lawrence F. Serra, 95, of New Eagle, died Friday, January 11, 2013.
He was born November 28, 1917, in Courtney, a son of the late Pasquale and Francesca Margoni Serra.
Mr. Serra began working for his uncles as a bricklayer and later retired in 1978 as a union bricklayer.
He was a 1935 graduate of Monongahela High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he trained gunners at Great Lakes Naval School.
Mr. Serra was a member of St. Damien of Molokai Parish, St. Anthony Church, in Monongahela. He was a member of Aaroas Haymakers 258 1/2 and Hootowls Club, both in New Eagle.
He enjoyed hunting, reading and crossword puzzles.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence M. and Laura Serra of Mechanicsville, Md.; a daughter, Denise S. Yonkers of New Eagle; a sister, Ida Hudak of Washington; three grandchildren, Lauren (John) Harbaugh of Carroll Township, Larry (Meagan) Serra of Woodbridge, Va., and Troy Yonkers of Forward Township; a great-grandson, Levi James Harbaugh; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are his wife, Edith (Natali) Serra, who died August 12, 1987; two brothers, Henry “Rocky” and Lucian “Chino” Serra; and a sister, Alma Cillo.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Marshall Marra Funeral Home, 216 Chess Street, Monongahela, 724-258-6767, wwwmarshallmarrafuneralhome.com, where a blessing service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, January 14, with Father George Chortos officiating. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Carroll Township. Military honors conducted by Mon-Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad.
