Stoneroad S. McCracken

Dairy farmer, member of Abundant Life Church

Stoneroad S. McCracken, 84, of Vanderbilt, passed away suddenly Tuesday, July 2, 2013, as the result of an automobile accident.

He was born September 12, 1928, in his home in Franklin Township, a son of the late Henry McCracken and Pearl Strong McCracken.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his stepmother, Hazel Strong McCracken.

Mr. McCracken was a member of Abundant Life Church, where he frequently enjoyed serving as a greeter for Sunday services.

He was a 1946 graduate of Uniontown Area Senior High School and served on the class reunion committee.

Mr. McCracken worked as a dairy farmer in Fayette County throughout his life. He was a master plowman in Fayette County and competed at both regional and state levels.

He enjoyed participating in other activities, such as whistling while he worked, which could be heard over any tractor a few fields away.

Mr. McCracken was a member of Curfew Grange, Fayette County Crop Improvement Association, forerunner of the Fayette County Fair Association.

He was a school bus driver, a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and a truck driver and equipment operator for Swenglish Coal.

In is retired life, he was a regular at the Franklin Township supervisors’ meetings, Randall’s Restaurant in Perryopolis for Saturday night dinners and public auctions across a multi-state area.

Surviving, at the time of death, was his wife of 65 years, Leona Jackson McCracken.

Surviving are two sons, W. Thomas “Tom” McCracken and wife Virginia of Franklin Township and David McCracken and wife Kathie of Waynesville N.C.; four grandchildren, Kristin Mortek and husband Sunny of Bowie, Md., Mark McCracken and wife Tammy of Franklin Township, Lisa Reynolds of Raleigh, N.C., and JoAnna Reynold and husband Tom Deveans of Monterey, Calif.; and four great-grandchildren, Noah and Summer Mortek and Madelyn and Finnian Deveans.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 7, in Abundant Life Church, 1239 Brownfield Road, Uniontown, where a memorial service to honor him and his wife will follow at 4:30 p.m., with their pastor, Nicholas Cook, officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Bowman Flatwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Abundant Life Church, 1239 Brownfield Road, Uniontown, PA 15401.
