IBM, Wachovia Bank retiree born in Millsboro

Joseph Lee “Joe” Piper, 69, of Harrisburg, N.C., passed away Friday, July 5, 2013.

He was born January 20, 1944, in Millsboro, a son of the late Elmer Lee and Pearl Hager Piper. Also deceased is daughter Michele Lynn Stovall.

Mr. Piper graduated from Bethlehem-Center High School in Millsboro and then proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1967.

After his military service, he attended Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

He retired from IBM and Wachovia Bank in Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Piper was a member of Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church and American Legion Post and Auxiliary 523 in Harrisburg.

His hobbies included fishing, gardening, woodworking, cars, reading and watching Westerns. He lived an unselfish life and always put others before himself. He loved his family and will truly be missed by those who loved him.

Surviving are his loving wife of 26 years, Sharon Zuver Piper; son John Lynn Jr. and wife Amy of Statesville, N.C.; his loving and precious granddaughter, McKenna Renee Stovall; brother James Piper and wife Sara of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday in Wilkinson Funeral Home, 100 Branchview Drive NE, P.O. Box 344, Concord, N.C. A funeral will be held at noon Monday, July 8, in Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church, Concord, with the Rev. Bob Pallison and the Rev. John Muse officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
