Robert Barr, 87, of Marianna, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, in Townview Health and Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg.
He was born January 8, 1926, in Marianna, a son of the late Wray and Cecil Moore Barr.
Mr. Barr was a graduate of West Bethlehem High School.
He then joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he proudly served in World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Barr was selected for pre-aviation cadet training, received an Air Medal with two bronze clusters, WWII Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, European-African Ribbon, three bronze star medals and Good Conduct Medal. He was an aerial gunner in B17s earning his air crew badge, was a senior weapon mechanic and earned the rank of staff sergeant.
Mr. Barr was a member of First Christian Church of Marianna, American Legion Post 744 of Marianna and Sportsman’s Club, he loved to fish, enjoyed country music, following the Pirates even when they lost and was considered a “Mr. Fix-It,” always fixing or building something, and overall a jack-of-all-trades.
On June 3, 1951, he married Rose Virginia Seidel, with whom he shared more than 62 years of marriage.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Rose Barr, are daughter Candace Rae Johnson; three grandchildren, Steve Matiyasic (Susan), Devon Allen Johnson and Jennifer Rose Johnson Schrom (Andrew); four great-granddaughters, Stephanie, Chelsea, Emersen and Drew; two sisters, Jean Ball and Mary Louise Lucatorto; brother Andrew “Jack” Barr; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are daughter Penny Allen Barr and son-in-law John Johnson.
Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Nichol Funeral Home, 1728 Main Street, Marianna, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 744 of Marianna.
