Edward C. Hrutkay

Member of Ave Maria Parish

Edward C. “Duff” Hrutkay, 80, of Washington, formerly of Daisytown, died Tuesday morning, July 16, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born May 17, 1933, in Bentleyville, a son of Ferdinand and Grace Groskopf Hrutkay.

Mr. Hrutkay was a 1951 graduate of Bentleyville High School and in 1958 received his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from California State Teacher’s College.

He taught industrial arts at Gladstone Junior High School in Pittsburgh and Fort Cherry High School in McDonald. He was also a draftsman for several engineering companies in Washington and Pittsburgh, designing industrial pipes. He later worked for Bethlehem Mines in the safety department and then was a yard foreman at Mine 60, Somerset Township.

Mr. Hrutkay was a member of Ave Maria Parish, its choir and resurrection choir.

A lifelong gentleman farmer, he also enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and enjoyed traveling to their football games.

His wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Gumbert Hrutkay, survives. They were married May 30, 1958, in St. Luke Church, Bentleyville.

Also surviving are two daughters, Lisa Hrutkay, wife of Tom Fledderus of Valley Grove, W.Va., and Lynne King, wife of William of Washington; four grandchildren, Kristen and Olivia King and Nic and Lane Fledderus; a sister, Irene Thames of Northville, Mich.; a brother, George “Gus” Hrutkay (Laura) of Bentleyville; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are brothers Charles H. “Ty”, John L. “Yonk”, Joseph, Frank and Steve Hrutkay and sisters Margaret Redmerski and infant Julia.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 19, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Ave Maria Church, Bentleyville, with the Rev. Edward L. Yuhas, as celebrant. Entombment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela. The Ave Maria Parish Women’s Guild will pray the rosary at 3 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
