Armond Sylvester Conte
Chemical engineer was U.S. Army combat officer
Armond Sylvester Conte, of Vernon Hills, Ill., formerly of Monongahela, 97, went to be with his Lord at 12:37 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2013.
He was born in East Monongahela April 17, 1916, a son of Antonio and Rose Iovino Con.
He was the third of 10 children.
Mr. Conte graduated from Monongahela High School in 1933 and the University of Pittsburgh 1938, with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering.
A commissioned World War II combat infantry officer, he served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946, completing active duty as a captain in the Fighting 69th Infantry Division that met the Russians at the Elbe River in Torgau.
After military service, he worked in the glass industry as a chemical engineer for nearly 50 years.
In 1947, he married his first wife, Lina Mori, who is deceased.
Surviving are their children, Sister Pamela Conte, Newport News, Va., Jeffrey (Joy) Conte, Bowie, Md., and Lisa Todd, Sweetser, Ind.; grandchildren, Hannah Conte, Lina Todd, Elizabeth Conte, Armond Conte II, Jeffrey Conte; and great-grandchild JR Conte.
In 1991, he married Melba Hinton, who survives, along with three stepchildren, Maureen Cole, Thomas Minnick and Kimberly (Michael) Feld; and 10 stepgrandchildren.
Also surviving are three siblings, Jean Bennett of Pittsburgh, Frank (Marilyn) Conte of Washington and Edith (Bob) Natalini of Belle Vernon; and 22 nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 22, in St. Damien of Molokai Parish, St. Anthonys Church with the Rev. James Bump as celebrant.
Committal services and interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Mon Valley Firing Squad and Honor Guard.
