WWII vet, Columbia Gas retiree served his church

Paul D. Sheller, 92, of Washington, died Tuesday, July 23, 2013, in his home.

He was born April 26, 1921, in Claysville, a son of the late James G. and Cora M. Hammett Sheller.

Mr. Sheller was a 1941 graduate of Claysville High School, and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II.

He was employed by Columbia Gas, first as a welder, and later as a supervisor and instructor. He retired in 1982.

Mr. Sheller was very active in Friendship Community Church, where he served as an elder and was devoted to Bible Release Time. He was instrumental in the creation of Cornerstone Ministries Camp in Jefferson.

He was a member of Hunt-Kennedy Post 639 of the American Legion in Claysville for more than 60 yeas. He loved to golf and was an avid supporter of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Mr. Sheller was active in West Finley Friendship Seniors’ Club.

On August 4, 1946, in Dutch Fork, he married Audrey Hartzell, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Kenneth D., husband of Sandra Sheller of Elkins, W.Va.; a daughter, Dianna, wife of Brian Burke of Encinitas, Calif.; a brother, Fredrick E. “Abbie” Sheller of Citrus Heights, Calif.; four granddaughters, Amanda Sheller, Leah Duke, Annie Perkins and Brittani Dixon; two great-grandchildren, Gavin Dixon and Matthew Duke; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are an infant son, Ralph Garfield Sheller; a daughter, Brenda Lee Sheller; and eight siblings, James, Carl, Gaylord, Robert, Howard, Edgar, Elizabeth and Wayne.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 26, in Friendship Community Church, 1090 Weirich Avenue, Washington, with Pastor Rick Bruckner officiating. Interment will follow in Claysville Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at graveside by Hunt-Kennedy Post 639.
