World War II veteran was all-around handyman
James Buono, 87, of Monongahela, River Hill, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013, in Washington Hospital.
Born July 1, 1925, in Monongahela, he was the son of the late Samuel and Antoinette (Yaria) Buono.
Mr. Buono retired in 1987 as a crane operator from J&L Steel.
He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during World War II.
Mr. Buono was a member of St. Damien of Molokai Parish, St. Anthony Church in Monongahela.
An all-around handyman, he was a member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1409 in Monongahela, East Monongahela Sportsman Club and Monongahela Veterans Council.
He also was a founding member of the Fathers and Son hunting camp in Potter County.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Jo Spinnenweber Buono, whom he married July 31, 1948; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Linda and William Hyslop of New Eagle, Debbie and William Howells, Cheryl and James Martis and Pam Kroll and fiancé Bob Anderson, all of Monongahela; a sister, Frances and husband William McDowell of Anchorage, Alaska; eight grandchildren, Tracy and Tory Hyslop, James Rocco (Suzanne) Martis, Rebecca Martis, Michele (Thomas) Fennell, Dennis Kroll, Jamie Kroll and fiancé Justin Zavacky and Joseph Kroll; five great-grandchildren Andrew, Abby and Avery Martis and Thomas and Trevor Fennell; and a sister-in-law, Florence Buono of Monongahela (River Hill).
Preceding him in death were a grandson, Jeffery Martis, who died in 1981; four brothers, Angelo, Patsy, Michael and Samuel Buono; and a sister, Parmelia Buono, who died as an infant.
Friends will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Marshall Marra Funeral Home, 216 Chess Street, Monongahela, PA, where services will be held at noon Friday, June 14, with Father William Terza officiating. Interment will follow in Mon Valley Memorial Park, Donora, with the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad conducting military honors.
