WWII, Korean conflict veteran was retired coal miner

Paul Baker III, 86, of Carmichaels, died Wednesday, June 12, 2013, in his home.

Mr. Baker was born April 17, 1927, in Somerset County, a son of the late Paul II and Blanche Wallace Baker.

He was a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Army’s 349th Infantry in Italy. He also served in the Korean cnflict. Mr. Baker was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Korean and United Nations service medals.

Mr. Baker worked at Nemacolin Mine and Humphry 7 Mine, retiring in 1989. He was a member of UMWA Local 6290 and Local 1058.

On November 27, 1948, he married Grace Nashwinter, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Paul Baker IV and wife Michelle of Florida, Donald Baker and wife Belinda of Carmichaels and David Baker and wife Lisa of Carmichaels; and four grandchildren, Brandy, Paulie Baker V of Florida and Heather and Ryan Baker of Carmichaels.

A son, Ronald R. Baker, died January 10, 1976, and grandson Donald L. Baker, died June 16, 2003. Both died of injuries from auto accidents. Also deceased are brother Robert and sister Delores Mahle Baker.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Lesako Funeral Home Inc., 204 Dowlin Avenue, Carmichaels, 724-966-5100, Paul M. Lesako, funeral director/supervisor/owner, and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, when a blessing service will begin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Bauer officiating.

Interment with full military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491, Carmichaels, in Laurel Point Cemetery, Carmichaels.
