Attorney, avid golfer

George R. Sewak, 83, an attorney, of Canonsburg, formerly of Johnstown, died Sunday, June 16, 2013.

He was born October 19, 1929, a son of the late Michael A. and Helen M. Moncilovich Sewak.

Mr. Sewak attended Franklin Borough School through 10th grade and St. Francis Preparatory School in Spring Grove through 12th grade, graduating in 1947. He graduated in 1951 with a bachelor of arts degress from St. Francis College in Loretto, where he was a member of its baseball and basketball teams.

He attended Georgetown University Law School in Washington, D.C., in 1951; however, he was inducted into the Army in 1951 and served in Korea with the 196th Field Artillery, Headquarters Company, receiving two Battle Stars, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged from active duty and entered Georgetown Law School and graduated receiving his law degree June 10, 1956. He was admitted to the District of Columbia in 1956. He was admitted to the Cambria County Court of Common Pleas in Johnstown in 1957 and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania in 1957. He was appointed an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania in 1957. In 1960, he served as a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a field office in the District of Columbia and in Los Angeles, Calif. He left the FBI in 1962 to begin his law practice in Washington, with a law firm now known as Pizzi and Sewak. He confined his practice to serve as claimant’s attorney in workmen’s compensation, negligence, real estate and municipal law. He was most proud when his daughter, Stephanie M. Sewak, joined him in the practice of law in 1994. He was a member of the Washington Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association, Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association, Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association and American Arbitration Association.

Mr. Sewak was a life member of the Elks, Fraternal Order of the Bears, Veteran Foreign Wars, American Legion, Arms Club and Loyal Order of the Moose.

He was an avid golfer and former member of Washington Country Club and Lone Pine Golf Club and participated in Bears Golf and Elks Golf Leagues. He enjoyed annual trips to the University of Virginia for football weekends with his close friends.

On January 30, 1959, he married Dolores J. “Tommy” Morascyzk of Canonsburg, in Winchester, Va., who survives.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a brother, Dr. Michael Sewak.

Surviving are sons George R. (Lynn) Sewak Jr. of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Thomas J. (Kathi) Sewak of Dublin, Ohio; daughters Carol Jean (Kevin) Fay of Mint Hill, N.C., Stephanie M. (Kenneth) Sewak Ruffner of Canonsburg and Amy L. (Justin) Ruta Sr. of Haddon Township, N.J.; sisters Helen Carol (George) Batchelor of Sewickley and Candy (Ted) Roman of Wexford; sisters-in-law Vi Sewak of Johnstown, Agnes Wicks of Johnstown and Flo “Bobbi” Fisher of Carson City, Nev.; brothers-in-law Ed Morascyzk of Washington and John Morascyzk of Johnstown; 12 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation. All services will be private. Interment will be held in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township, with full military honors.
