Retired president of Lanier Clothes

Mr. James F. “Jim” Tuman III, 65, of Peachtree City, Ga., passed away from complications of lung cancer Thursday, June 20, 2013.

Surviving are his wife, Sandy Tuman of Peachtree City; two sons, Peter Hogan and wife Kimberley of Knoxville, Tenn., and James F. Tuman IV of Savannah, Ga.; his mother and stepfather, Virginia and Bryan Lash of West Newton; two grandchildren, Peter Hogan Jr. and Jacob Hogan, both of Knoxville; a sister, Judith Backus of West Newton; a stepsister, June Tuman of Baltimore, Md.; an uncle, Ray Victor and wife Sylvia of Amissville, Va.; a cousin, Leslie Dawson of Centerville, Va.; a niece, Kimberly Chilzer; and a nephew, Robert Byrne of West Newton.

He was preceded in death by his father, James F. Tuman II.

He retired as president of Lanier Clothes, Oxford Industries, Atlanta. During his 32 years with Lanier, he served in several key positions. He was the company’s first expatriate employee in 1988, serving as general manager of operations in Merida, Mexico.

He became Lanier’s vice president of manufacturing in 1995. In 2006, he was selected as president of Lanier Clothes, where he served until his retirement in 2010. In all of these roles and through the many changes over the years, his keen business acumen, exceptional leadership and tireless dedication to the company and its employees and customers were constants.

Mr. Tuman was devoted to his wife, sons, family, friends and company. He was a compassionate man who lived to serve others and didn’t rest until he knew their needs were met. He was a servant leader throughout his life and career. He taught his sons and grandsons that one measure of a man is how he treats other people.

His care and compassion showed every day of his life. He enjoyed all the beauty life has to offer, from travel throughout the world and hiking the Appalachian Trail, to the music of Rod Stewart, sports and playing pranks with his grandchildren. He is missed and forever loved by many.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m., the time of a celebration of life service, Saturday, June 29, in Parrott Funeral Home, Fairburn Ga., 770-964-4800.
