Robert C. Greenlee
Robert C. “Bobby” Greenlee, 91, of Clarksville, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 9, 2013.
He was born September 9, 1921, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late John B. and Flora Weaver Greenlee.
Mr. Greenlee was raised on the family farm in the Castile area, near Marianna. He had attended Barrs Run School and West Bethlehem High School.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters aboard the USS South Dakota (BB-57) that participated in many air/sea battles in the South Pacific. He was an early member of the American Legion Steele-Lillie Post 744, Marianna.
After he was discharged from military service, he started working as a coal miner in the Chartiers Mine at Clarksville. Later, he worked for Bethlehem Steel Corp. at the Marianna Mine. After the mine closed, he drove a truck until his retirement.
On January 8, 1946, he married his beloved wife, Betty Arnold, who survives. They took up residence in Clarksville.
Mr. Greenlee was an avid sports fan and enjoyed hunting with his family and friends. He played baseball and church league softball on local teams. He was instrumental in starting youth baseball in the Ten Mile Valley area in the mid- to late 1950s, and, through his efforts, teams were formed in Zollarsville, Marianna, Lone Pine, Lagonda and Sandy Plains. He was a great fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and loved the game of baseball. He also enjoyed high school wrestling and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He was an active member of East Bethlehem Baptist Church and played dartball on its team.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, John B. Greenlee of Clarksville and Robert “Bob” Greenlee and wife Natalie of Clarksville; five grandchildren, Anthony Romanowski and wife Stacey of Perrysburg, Ohio, Katherine Marie Youngs and husband Christian of Hastings, Mich., Melissa Lutz of Meadville, Brian Greenlee and wife Michelle of Conway and Rachel Greenlee of Clarksville; and six great-grandchildren.
Deceased is a daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Westley Greenlee.
Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Behm Funeral Home, 1477 Jefferson Road, Jefferson, Gregory P. Rohanna, supervisor, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, with the Rev. George Lammay officiating. Interment will follow in Horn Lutheran Cemetery, Marianna.
