Ruth Smith
Ruth Smith, 84, of Washington, formerly of Rochester, N.Y., passed away peacefully Thursday, March 14, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born May 11, 1928, in Washington, a daughter of the late John and Jenny Munce Mackey.
Mrs. Smith was a 1946 graduate of Trinity High School and a 1950 graduate of Washington Hospital School of Nursing.
She did her nurse’s training in Philadelphia as a surgical nurse and was employed by Mother of Sorrows School in Rochester as a school nurse for many years.
For more than 45 years, Mrs. Smith was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, having received the Silver Beaver Award for her service. She also was interested in genealogy, staying current with her chosen career of nursing, and spending time with family. She was a longtime, active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
On June 9, 1956, she married Clifford Smith, who died October 9, 2000.
Surviving are three sons, Hultz (Barbara) Smith of Springdale, Ariz., Bruce (Audie) Smith of Washington and James A. Smith of Butler; seven grandchildren, Jennie (Jon) Hubbard, Andrew Smith, Meredith (Jeremy) Hornberger, Ephraim (Stacey) Sloan, Meghan (Christopher) Benninghoff, Robert Smith and Steven Smith; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, in Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 525 Fairway Drive, South Strabane Township, with Bishop Matthew North officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.
