John J. Encandela

John J. Encandela, 93, of Houston, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2013, in his home, with family by his side.

He was born October 3, 1919, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Charles and Lucy Livolsi Encandela.

Mr. Encandela served during World War II with the Army Air Force Squadron C 1060th base unit as private first class, at which he received a Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Meadow Lands, Sons of Italy and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191, both of Canonsburg.

Mr. Encandela worked at the former McGraw Edison plant in Canonsburg as a machine operator.

On September 24, 1949, he married his beloved wife, Mary Mazza, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Donna Shriver of Houston; a son, John A. Encandela of Long Island, N.Y.; two grandsons, Michael Maloy and Greg Shriver; a great-granddaughter, Mya Maloy; two sisters, Mary Mazza and Jacqueline Gribbin; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are sisters twin Lena DeRosa, Sarah Encandela and Josephine Mersino and brother Caysntena “Gus” Encandela.

Friends are welcome from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120, where departing prayers will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, with the Rev. Carmen D’Amico, as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Canonsburg. Full military honors will be accorded by the combined honor guard VFW Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston.
