Robert Smith Sr., 83, of Eighty Four, formerly of Charleroi, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born January 23, 1930, in Monessen, a son of the late William Sr. and Jessie Gardner Smith.
Mr. Smith was a former contractor and owner of Romar Construction Co., a member and president of the Highland-Erie Committee and a former mason. He was also the chairman and a founding brother of the Smith-Madison Family Reunion.
He enjoyed reading, watching Westerns on television, bowling and tennis.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Marie Smith of Eighty Four; eight children, Shirley (late Frank) Robinson of Atlanta, Ga., Marie (Edward) Hickman of Detroit, Mich., Robin (Amadou) Dione of Las Vegas, Nev., Robert Smith Jr. of Meadow Lands, Mark Smith of Washington, Stacy (Jason) Hollis of Verona, Lisa (Timothy) Watts of South Strabane and Rae Neil Smith of Nottingham Township; 11 grandchildren, Frank, Jason, Jamie, Jennifer, Robert, Cheresse, Latoya, Randis, Jared, Jacob and TiLisa; several great-grandchildren; sister Vivian Rodgers of Manhattan, N.Y.; stepbrothers Charles, Norman, Earl and Robert Madison; stepsisters Barbara Edwards and Roberta Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, deceased are four brothers, a stepfather, two stepbrothers and two stepsisters.
Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Nazareth Baptist Church, 123 North Lincoln Street, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Funeral services are entrusted to William R. Taylor Funeral Home, 645 McMahon Avenue, Monessen, supervisor Trudy Taylor-Bristol, director in charge of arrangements, 724-684-4877. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Nazareth Baptist Church.
