Beth Israel member owned The Adler Co.

Edith S. Adler of Washington, formerly of Canonsburg, died Thursday, May 31, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.

She was born December 2, 2012, a daughter of the late Bernath and Mollie Roth Schwartz.

Mrs. Adler was a 1930 graduate of Schenley High School, Pittsburgh, and attended Margaret Morrison College of Carnegie Tech. She was a member of Beth Israel Congregation, Washington, where she served on the Board of Sisterhood and was a member of Hadassah. She was also a 78-year member of Rodef Shalom Congregation in Pittsburgh.

She and Bertram Adler opened a thriving clothing business, The Adler Co., in 1941 in Canonsburg, until 1968.

Mrs. Adler also volunteered at Canonsburg General Hospital for 52 years and for Washington Hospital Foundation.

On June 2, 1935, she married Bertram Adler, who died April 9, 2001.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. Jon S. (Carol) Adler of McMurray and Alan R. (Irene) Adler of Akron, Ohio; three grandchildren, Margie (David) Cohen of Twinsburg, Ohio, Dave (Niki) Adler of Mt. Lebanon and Alyse Adler of Columbus, Ohio; and four great-grandchildren, Lauren and Rachel Cohen and Bobby and Tim Adler.

Friends will be received from noon to 1 p.m., the hour of services, Sunday, June 2, in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, with Rabbi David Novitsky officiating. Former riverboat deckhand, roofing laborer

Timothy W. Ankrom, 59, of Sycamore, died at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2013, in his home, after being in failing health for the past five years.

He was born December 13, 1953, a son of the late Willard Ray and Wilma Jean Hartzell Ankrom, and had resided in Morris Township, Greene County, since 1987.

Mr. Ankrom enjoyed hunting and fishing as long as his health permitted and spending time with his family and pet dog, “Lucky.”

He was a former deckhand on a riverboat and had spent several years as a roofing laborer in general construction.

On February 14, 1998, he married his longtime companion, Brenda Lee Willy, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Nicole Lynn and Kayla Michele Ankrom, both at home; two brothers, William, husband of Barbara Ankrom of Jefferson, and Terry, husband of Tina Ankrom of Streetsboro, Ohio; three sisters, Bonnie Egger of Cecil, Kimberly Price of Clarksville and Darlene, wife of Bill Bates of Waynesburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a brother, Robert D. Ankrom, and a sister, Marlene Lough.

At the request of the family, there will be no public visitation. Family and friends are invited from 11 a.m. to noon, the time of a memorial service, Tuesday, June 4, in Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville, with Pastor Connie Loughman officiating. Canonsburg man had passion for oil painting

Joseph O. Budkey, 82, of Canonsburg, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, in Townview Health and Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg.

He was born November 23, 1930, in Canonsburg, a son of William and Anna Homerosky Budkey.

Mr. Budkey was Catholic.

Prior to his retirement, he worked at Pittsburgh Metal Lithographing, National Can Corp. and McGraw Edison.

He enjoyed fishing, golf, hockey, watching sports, especially baseball, and had a passion for oil painting.

Surviving are his sisters, Constance Matrogran of Canonsburg, Doris Devich and husband Don of Beaver and Margaret “Peggy” Tornabene of Fairmont, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Budkey Jr., and a sister, Joan Smith.

Enjoyed drawing, riding his bike

Gaylord W. Dillard, 79, of Washington, died Sunday, May 26, 2013, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.

He was born December 26, 1933, in Washington, a son of Anderson and Rachel Miller Dillard.

Mr. Dillard was very artistic and enjoyed drawing and riding his bike. He was employed at Burger King, where he did maintenance.

A sister, Hope McClendon of Youngstown, Ohio, survives.

Deceased are nine brothers, Arthur, Paul E., Donald, Merrill, Joseph, Clyde, Edgar and Neal Dillard and Ellsworth Dilliard, and a sister, Doris Walden.

WWII, Korean conflict veteran retired from PPG

John A. “Jack” Green of Chartiers Township died Tuesday, May 28, 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; sons John W. (Cindy) of Harrisburg and James S. of Pittsburgh; a brother, Kendell of Wisconsin; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are two brothers, three sisters and an infant son.

Mr. Green was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, serving in World War II and the Korean conflict.

He joined PPG in 1954 and retired in 1989.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 3, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Upper St. Clair Township. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Westminster Endowment Fund. Arrangements are by Milton E. Hamel Mortuary.

Evelyn Jeannine Kelly, 84, of Remington, Va., a longtime resident of Washington, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, May 29, 2013, in Mt. Carmel East Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, following a brief illness while visiting her daughter.

U.S. Navy veteran served in Korean War

William E. Simpson Jr., 83, of Bridgeville, was born June 29, 1929, in Houston, and died Wednesday, May 29, 2013.

He was a son of William and Helen McCarl Simpson; beloved husband of Elaine “Tootsie” Morris Simpson; loving father of Bruce G. (Lisa) Simpson, Scott W. (Nancy) Simpson and Rebecca (Rick) Condo; grandfather of Kelly (Brian) Fritz, Sara, Juliana and Melissa Simpson, Alaina Condo, Allison Simpson, Natalie and Nicholas Condo and Scott Simpson Jr.; and a brother of Barbara Snarey and the late Norman Simpson. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Simpson was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Bethel Park.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of Bridgeville American Legion Post 54 for 57 years. He was an avid bowler and golfer and was a social member of Muse Independent Club.

Avid baker enjoyed feeding family, friends

Rose Skarupa, 91, of Cherry Valley, died Friday, May 31, 2013, in her home.

She was born May 23, 1922, in Slovan, a daughter of Frank and Mary Ann Mosti Bongiorni.

Mrs. Skarupa had been employed by Delfrate’s Meat Packing Co. in Slovan and Billy Boy’s Pizza in Burgettstown.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Burgettstown and St. Ann’s Church in Bulger.

Mrs. Skarupa was an avid baker and enjoyed “feeding” her homemade goodies to family and friends.

Surviving are a daughter, Karen (Jim) Pagasky of Cherry Valley; a son, Michael (Pauline) Skarupa of Cherry Valley; grandchildren Craig (Allyson) Pagasky and Garett, Brett and Jessie Skarupa; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Mike Skarupa; brothers Herman, Dominic, Octavio “Tib,” Joe, Gino, Harry and Eddie Bongiorni; and sisters Alice Tenaglia, Violet Conjeski, Edith Filipponi and Amelia “Bunny” Beard.

Worked for Schindler Elevator and Shop ‘n Save

Joseph J. “Sonny” Sullivan, 77, of Washington, died Friday, May 31, 2013, in UPMC-Presbyterian hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born September 25, 1935, in Hayes, a son of the late Joseph R. and Edna E. Rycon Sullivan.

Mr. Sullivan retired in 1994 after working for more than 30 years with Schindler Elevator Co. of which the last 14 years were spent working in Chicago before moving back home to Pittsburgh to retire. For the last 16 years, he worked in the meat department in Washington Shop ‘n Save.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Sullivan was an avid Steelers fan, liked to watch movies and work in his yard. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be missed sadly by his family and many friends.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Macfarlane Sullivan; two sons, J.R. Sullivan and Michael Sullivan, both of Eighty Four; three daughters, Deborah Sullivan and Suzanne Baumgard, both of Eighty Four, and Amy Jo Sullivan of Canonsburg; six grandchildren, Carly Del Ray, Kelsey Peters, Kaytlin and Kyle Sullivan and Colton and Tyler Baumgard; a sister, Patricia (Leonard) Spicuzza; two brothers-in-law, Robert A. Macfarlane and James W. (Dawn) Macfarlane of Monongahela; a sister-in-law, Terrie Macfarlane of New Salem; and many nieces and nephews.

He also leaves behind his loving dog, Cooper.

Preceding him in death was a grandson, Chaz Sullivan, and a brother-in-law, Thomas H. Macfarlane Jr.
