Beloved wife, loving mother

Janice M. Arden, born June 8, 1938, of Finleyville, passed away Saturday, November 9, 2013.

She was the beloved wife of Elwin Norman Arden for 35 years; loving mother of Cynthia DeVos-Klingensmith (Jim), Cheryl DeVos-Quail (Tim) and Janice DeVos-Craford; grandmother of six; great-grandmother “GG” of eight; daughter of the late Louis and Myrtle Jones; and sister of 11, preceded in death by six.

Mrs. Arden began life by being totally club-footed and in casts until the age of 11. She rose above her challenge and was the lead singer of The Roulettes in South Carolina.

She returned home to family in Canonsburg.

Mrs. Arden had worked numerous years for optometrists in Canonsburg and Carnegie. She was president of the Parent Teacher Association in Chartiers Valley School District. She worked as chief security officer for Koppers Corp. in Bridgeville. She retired as the owner of Jan’s Contracting Co., where she and husband Norm worked very diligently to make a success.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling to the Amish Country, but her favorite place was Myrtle Beach, S.C. She loved sewing, gardening and shopping.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Beinhauer Funeral Home, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, 724-941-3211, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 13. Interment will be held in Woodruff Memorial Park, North Strabane Township.

Canon-McMillan cook was St. Patrick Church member

Mary C. Binder, 93, of Greensburg, formerly of Canonsburg, passed away peacefully at 12:35 a.m. Saturday, November 9, 2013, in her home, with her loving family by her side.

She was born June 15, 1920, in Bridgeville, a daughter of the late Edoardo and Teresa Valenzano Andreone.

Mrs. Binder lived most of her life in Canonsburg and the past eight years in Greensburg.

She was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church and its Christian Mothers and Guild.

Prior to her retirement, she had been employed for many years as a cook for the dietary department of Canon-McMillan School District.

Mrs. Binder had been a member of SNPJ Lodge 138 in Strabane, ladies auxiliaries of American Legion Post 902 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 and Canonsburg Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed dancing, walking and bingo, among many other games. She also enjoyed gardening and building puzzles.

On November 29, 1947, she married Robert C. Binder, who passed away September 2, 1982.

Surviving are two daughters, Marie (Jeff) Taylor of Sierra Madre, Calif., and Linda (David) Hauck of Irwin; two grandchildren, Marie (Sam) Wilson and Paul (Jill) Hauck; a stepgranddaughter, Laura Taylor; a brother, Gus (Betty) Andreone of Sarasota, Fla.; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are a daughter, Patricia Ann Binder, who passed away November 6, 1991; three brothers, Adolf, Robert and Joseph Andreone; and three sisters, Carlotta Valentino, Rose Emling and Rosina Andreone, who died as a child.

Friends are welcome from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m Tuesday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120, where departing prayers will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 13, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.

Enjoyed spending time with family

Constance June Brake, 79, of New Eagle, died unexpectedly Saturday, November 9, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

She was born July 10, 1934, in Finleyville, a daughter of Clyde Victor and Henrietta Thropp Wilson.

In her younger years, she was employed at Bell Telephone in Monongahela as an operator.

Mrs. Brake was a member of Riverview Baptist Church in New Eagle.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and volunteering at the senior center in Claysville. She liked word search puzzles, cooking and eating.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Brake Jr. and Erin of New Eagle and Terry Brake and Linda of Woodlawn, Tenn.; a daughter, Cindy Brake of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren, Chris, Allison and Monique; a great-grandson, Caleb; and a sister, Grace Nickolas of Nashville, Tenn.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, is her husband, Robert Lee Brake Sr., who died April 19, 2012.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 13, with the Pastor Kenneth Kirby officiating. Interment will follow in Mon Valley Memorial Park, Donora.

Family physician was avid athlete

Dr. James K. Clements, M.D., of Washington, passed into Jesus’ arms Saturday, November 9, 2013, after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Fort Worth, Texas.

Dr. Clements was a 1969 graduate of Columbia Heights High School in Minnesota, a 1973 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University and a 1976 graduate of University of Nebraska School of Medicine.

After one year of residency in pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, he entered his residency in family practice at Washington Hospital. He began his career as a uniformed officer of the U.S. Public Health Service in Salem, Ore. He then started a private practice as a family physician in Washington, a community which he loved and served until becoming ill in 2006.

Despite his academic and professional accomplishments, he will be most remembered for his compassion, love and faith. Numerous patient letters testify to his compassion. His love for family was equaled only by their love for him and his kindness, concern and gentle sense of humor.

Dr. Clements lived his faith, writing prescriptions for the soul, anonymously giving food baskets at Thanksgiving, Christmas and on other occasions, and by presenting the Gospel to many different audiences. He had the hope and assurance of eternal life, which his family believes he now enjoys.

He was an avid athlete, outdoors man and sports fan. He was an all-conference linebacker and played baseball in high school. He loved fishing, was an excellent skier and even bowled a 300 game. He enjoyed golf and endured many golf outings with his family. At home, you could often find him reading, playing with his golden retrievers or mowing on his prized tractor.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Ava Fatigati Clements; two sons, Matthew (Carla) of Charlotte, N.C., and Jeremy of Coraopolis; two sisters, Chris (Paul) Crist of Hudson, Ohio, and Cindy (George) Henry of Plymouth, Minn.; a stepmother, “Auntie-Mom” Donna Clements of Casa Grande, Ariz.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and many treasured friends and former patients.

Deceased are his parents, Claude and Lila Faye Fuchser Clements; and his beloved son, Michael.

Viewing will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 13, in South Hills Bible Chapel, 300 Gallery Drive, McMurray, PA 15317.

Canton Township planner served in U.S. Army

Gerald B. Johnson Sr., 84, of Washington, died October 10, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

He was born June 12, 1929, in Washington, a son of H. Michael and Dora M. Hunt Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was employed by Findlay Refractory for 25 years, where he was recording secretary for the union. He had previously worked at Hazel Atlas, Continental Can and Brockway Glass for 12 years.

He served for two years in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 945 in Wormleysburg.

Mr. Johnson was a member of Friendship Community Church in Washington.

He served on Canton Township Pennsylvania Planning Commission for 10 years.

On August 16, 1953, in Muncey, he married Doris McAfee Powell, who preceded him in death March 17, 2000.

Surviving are a son, Gerald B. Johnson Jr. of Washington; two stepdaughters, Ellen Robison and Sandra Wilkinson, both of Washington; three grandchildren, Michael, Amy and Nathan Johnson; five great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Deceased are brothers Duane C. Johnson and Johnny Johnson; sister Opel Rumiser; and a brother and a sister in infancy.

Friends will be received from noon to 1 p.m., the time of service, Wednesday, November 13, in Dale D. DeAngelo Funeral Home, 1290 Jefferson Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Paul R. Gray of Wesleyan Church officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by the U.S. Army and American Legion Post 902.

Trinity H.S. grad loved animals, chocolate

Norma Jean Barbour Quay, 88, of Oxford, Ohio, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 5, 2013, in Knolls of Oxford.

She was born May 3, 1925, in Washington, a daughter of the late Richard Montgomery Barbour and Bertha Mary Chapman Barbour.

Mrs. Quay was the last member of her immediate family.

On July 2, 1949, she married Henry Quay, who preceded her in death August 8, 1995. She lived all of her married life in Washington.

She moved to Oxford in 2001 to be near her stepson and family after the death of her husband.

Deceased are seven brothers, James, Harry, Richard, Howard, Franklin, Edward and Carl Barbour; and a sister, Bertha Barbour Atkinson.

Surviving are a stepson, Richard Henry (Rebecca) Quay; three grandchildren, Maria Elizabeth (Steve) Brossart of Mason, Ohio, William Henry Quay (Sarah Chernitsky) of Oxford and Daniel Robert (Marie) Quay of Cincinnati, Ohio; and seven great-grandchildren, Sarah, Christopher, Jacob, Patrick, Anthony, Grace and Monica.

Mrs. Quay was a 1943 graduate of Trinity High School.

During World War II, she was a telephone operator for Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania.

She loved animals, especially cats, and was a big NASCAR fan. Her favorite food was by far anything chocolate.

Edward E. Snyder III, 45, of Cecil, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013, in UPMC-Shadyside hospital, Pittsburgh.
