Mildred Marsteller Weir, 92, of Bentleyville, died Thursday afternoon, November 21, 2013, in her home.
She was born September 28, 1921, in Leckrone, a daughter of George Fry and Edna Hails Marsteller.
She was a 1939 graduate of Bentleyville High School.
Mrs. Weir was a 1943 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, now Indiana University of Pennsylvania, with a major in home economics. Her teaching career spanned 34 years in Bentleyville, California and Fallowfield Township schools and Charleroi Area High School.
She was very active in community and civic activities, serving as regent of Daughters of American Pioneers and president of Pioneer Club.
Mrs. Weir was a charter member of Bentleyville Lioness Club and served as president and secretary. In 1994, she also became a member of Bentleyville Lions Club. She received the Melvin Jones Fellowship in 1994, the highest award in Lionism, and the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award in Lionism. During her time in Lionism, she served offices in the local clubs and on the district level. She was currently a member of Charleroi Lions Club.
She was a member of Bentworth Civic Organization and served three years as president. She held life membership with Washington County Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association and National Education Association.
Mrs. Weir joined Bentleyville United Methodist Church in 1947, where she was a Sunday school teacher and department superintendent and served on many boards and commissions. At the time of her death, she was active at Belle Vernon United Methodist Church.
On June 18, 1946, she married Vaughn Weir, who died June 22, 2004. They were married for 58 years.
For 20 years, the couple decorated Main Street, Bentleyville, with seasonal floral arrangements.
Surviving are a son, Joel Keith Weir of Bentleyville; a daughter, Joyce W. Bateman (Michael) of Stuart’s Draft, Va., and their children, Michelle Eyler (Rob) and Teresa Remmenga (Mark); great-granddaughters Megan and Sarah Eyler and Elisabeth Remmenga; brother Boyd Marsteller of Bentleyville; sister Maxine Kelley of Largo, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are sisters Thelma Morris and Ruth Sprague.
Friends are welcome from noon to 2 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 26, in First Presbyterian Church, 812 Main Street, Bentleyville, with the Rev. David Zona officiating. Interment will follow in Beallsville Cemetery. A Lions Club memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Belle Vernon United Methodist Church, Bentleyville Public Library or Lions Beacon Lodge.
