World War II veteran

Charles F. Schmalz, 94, of Houston, died Wednesday, November 27, 2013, in Townview Health and Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg.

He was born April 13, 1919, in Canonsburg, a son of Charles H. and Maude Martin Schmalz.

Mr. Schmalz was a self-employed fabricator and welder. He would weld or fabricate anything he could for the house, specifically handrails and furniture.

He had also worked for 22 years as a batch tester for Cyanamide of Bridgeville.

Mr. Schmalz was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Army. He was a member of American Legion Post 902 of Houston.

He enjoyed spending time with his family.

On January 15, 1940, he married Martha Frazier, who died March 19, 2001.

Surviving are two sons, David Schmalz of Houston and Richard Schmalz of Meadow Lands; four grandchildren, Richard Schmalz, Christopher Schmalz (Jackie), Christine Sapienza (Dan) and Aric Schmalz: four great-grandchildren, Ricky, Benjamin, Jacob and Matthew; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two sons, Donald and Charles Schmalz; a grandson, Jason Schmalz; and two sisters, Mabel Hartley and Virginia Mae Schmalz, who died in infancy.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon, the time of service, Saturday, November 30, 2013, in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342. Interment will be private.
