William Wesley Walters

Master mechanic owned Mandy’s Garage

William Wesley “Mandy” Walters, 84, of Monongahela, died Tuesday, October 1, 2013, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.

He was born October 9, 1928, in Monongahela, a son of Charles E. and Gertrude J. Baxter Walters.

Mr. Walters was a retired maintenance supervisor for Mon Valley Sewage Authority in Donora. He was well-known for being a master mechanic throughout the Mon Valley and surrounding areas. He owned and operated Mandy’s Garage for more than 60 years, until health problems caused him to close his doors but was still open for consultations. A true Ford man, his specialty was transmissions, but everyone who was acquainted with him knew that he could work on and fix anything that was put in front of him. For many years, he worked on police cars, fire trucks and ambulances in Monongahela and surrounding communities. He was a master at welding and took his portable welder everywhere. Even while he was working, he made time to stop and fix a child’s bike that had a problem. There wasn’t a job too big or small for him to put his heart and soul into.

He was an active member of Gallatin Sunnyside Volunteer Fire Department and Valley Inn Sportsman’s Club, a social member of Carroll Legion Post 949 in Dunkirk and a member of Good Sam’s Club camping organization. He was one of the original members of Fourth Street Boat Dock Club at Monongahela Aquatorium. He was a past member of Monongahela Volunteer Fire Department and Ginger Hill Grange. He enjoyed vacationing in Myrtle Beach and going to his camps in Emporium and Greene County. His favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobile and quad riding. He was quite the family man, enjoyed being around people, telling stories and lifting everyone’s spirits. He was a man loved and respected by all who knew him.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Loutitt Walters, with whom he celebrated 47 years of marriage August 28, 2013; a daughter, Gloria Rocco of Irwin; a son, Robert Walters Sr. and wife Penny of Monongahela; a daughter, Joyce Protz and husband Jim of Dunlevy; five grandchildren, Robert Walters Jr. and wife Laurie, William Walters III and wife Staci, Nicole Moyer and husband Ben and twins Josie and Jamie Protz; two great-grandchildren, John Walters and Olivia Moyer; a sister, Betty Sutherland and husband Clyde of Monongahela; a brother-in-law, Charles Loutitt of Van Voorhis; three sisters-in-law, Gloria Burgoyne and Frances Loutitt, both of Monongahela, and Betty Marynchak of New Eagle; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Wesley Walters Jr., who died February 20, 1974; a brother, Charles Walters; a son-in-law, Fred Rocco; and a brother-in-law, Richard Loutitt.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will be held at noon Friday, October 4, with the Rev. Larry G. Dunn officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery.
