Martin P. Kisla
Slovan VFW member, Western Penitentiary retiree
Martin P. Kisla, 78, of Burgettstown, died Monday, October 7, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.
He was born August 21, 1935, in Weirton, W.Va., a son of the late Michael and Helen Tope Kisla.
Mr. Kisla was employed by Youth Forestry at Raccoon State Park for 29 years and then retired from Western Penitentiary. He served as a truant officer and was a substitute teacher for Burgettstown School District. He also worked for Jake Schneider Bus Co., driving a van for special-needs children.
He was a life member of Slovan Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed playing cards with his buddies on Saturday nights, football and wrestling.
Mr. Kisla’s two sons and his grandsons were his pride and joy.
He was a U.S. Army veteran as a military policeman.
On August 21, 1962, he married Maxine Mermon, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael Kisla of Burgettstown and Martin (Cherie) Kisla of Houston; two grandsons, Martin Kisla III and Tim Stienstraw; and a sister, Josephine Kisla of Mentor, Ohio.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Taucher Funeral Home, 23 Erie Mine Road, Burgettstown, where a blessing service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 11, with the Rev. George Moneck officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Florence. Full military honors will be accorded by Slovan-Burgettstown Veterans of Foreign Wars.
