James R. Moore Jr., 97, of Washington, formerly of Canonsburg, died Tuesday, October 22, 2013, in his home at Strabane Woods.

He was born June 5, 1916, in Ellsworth, a son of James R. Sr. and Anna Mae Holub Moore.

Mr. Moore, a coal miner for several years, retired from Pennsylvania Transformer, where he worked in the assembly department for more than 25 years.

His wife of 75 years, Valeta B. Shelkey, passed away May 8, 2008.

Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Ann Johnston of Albuquerque, N.M.; son Donald R. “Mike” Moore (Jo Ann) of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister Newanna Templeton of Washington; two brothers, Donald P. Moore of McMurray and Charles Edward Moore of Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his wife, are two sisters, Stella Langendorf and Adaline Gearing; and two brothers, Thomas and Burgess Moore.

Services and interment will be private. Arrangements have been entrusted to McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston. The family suggests friends who wish may contribute to Strabane Woods Benevolent Care Fund, 319 Wellness Way, Washington, PA 15301.
