Army National Guard veteran

John Allen Pettit, 78, of Washington, died Sunday, October 27, 2013, in his home.

He was born November 16, 1934, in Washington, a son of the late John Thomas and Gail Jinkens Pettit.

Mr. Pettit was a 1953 graduate of Trinity High School.

On January 29, 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard, where he served until he was transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves January 28, 1957. He was called to active duty September 4, 1957, and served until his honorable discharge August 26, 1959. Mr. Pettit completed his U.S. Army Reserve obligation June 26, 1962.

Mr. Pettit worked for Molycorp Inc. as a millwright.

He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 22 and Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.

His first wife, Constance McConnell, died October 29, 1991.

On November 27, 1999, he married Mary Cummins Williams, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Chrystal (Timothy) Ott of Quincy, Ill., Terry Pettit of Washington and Kelly (Brian) Rothermund of West Alexander; four stepdaughters, Susan Poland of Washington, Sheri (Mike Gizzoni) Williams of Washington, Sheila (Dan) Bryner of Avella and Stacey (Bill) Beatty of West Alexander; three sisters, Frances Loar of DuBois, Linda Riggins of Washington and Colleen (Tim) Johnson of St. Clairsville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Timothy (Amber) Ott, Ian (Alecia) Rothermund and Alex and Michael Ott; six stepgrandchildren, Mark Bryner, William (Dasha) Bryner, Brad Poland, Eric Poland, Isaac Beatty and Jerrod Williams; and two great-great-grandchildren, Luke Poland and Liam Rothermund.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 31. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
