Alvin W. Spence
Former Washington School Board member
Alvin W. Spence, a lifelong resident of Washington, passed away peacefully September 4, 2013.
He was born, the youngest of four sons, to Joseph Clark Spence and Nelle Ewing Spence on April 15, 1929.
Mr. Spence was a 1948 graduate of Trinity High School.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Spence embarked on a 38-year career for Bell of Pennsylvania/Verizon, retiring in 1991.
He was the devoted husband of Elizabeth Smith Spence, whom he married April 16, 1953. They shared a loving marriage for 58 years until her death March 12, 2010.
Mr. Spence was a member of Allison Avenue Abundant Life Baptist Church for over 60 years, serving in many roles including church moderator and deacon.
He was a 24-year member of Washington School Board, serving 20 years as president. He was also a member of Washington Masonic Sunset Lodge 623 American Legion.
Surviving are two sons, Wayne (Beth Posa) of Gibsonia and David (Barbara King) of Kennett Square; four grandchildren, Brian (Diana Hagan), David P., David J and Kathryn; two great-grandchildren, Max and Lyla; a brother, Joseph Spence; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, James and Ray Spence.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 7, in Abundant Life Baptist Church with the Rev. George Garancosky and the Rev. Rick Bruckner officiating.
