WWII veteran enjoyed gardening

Raymond Haley Chambers, 87, of Canonsburg, died Thursday, September 5, 2013, in Consulate Retirement Village.

He was born July 8, 1926, in Canonsburg, a son of the late John and Jessie Haley Chambers.

Mr. Chambers was a member of Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church, Canonsburg, where he was a trustee and an usher.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Chambers was a very active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as a past Quarter Master of the state of Delaware. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Chambers enjoyed gardening and flowers.

On April 7, 1951, he married his wife of 62 years, Patricia Morgan, who survives.

Prior to his retirement, he worked as a machine operator and for the DuPont factory for 41 years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Walter Chambers and wife Catherine of Uniontown, Ohio, John Chambers and wife Christine of North Strabane and William Chambers of Middletown, Md.; daughter-in-law, Anne Chambers; seven grandchildren, Bethany, Devon, Joshua, Emily, Caitlyn, Erin and Abbey Chambers; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, deceased are a son, Timothy Chambers; five brothers, Carl, Charles, Lowell, Claude and John Rudolph Chambers; and six sisters, Joyce Sommers, Mary Sanders, Ora Polansky, Ada Briar, Clara Gilmore and Lillian Martin.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Sollon Funeral Home Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Sollon, director. Friends and family will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, September 9, in Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church, Canonsburg, where services will be held with the Rev. Dr. Donald C. Austin officiating. Interment will follow in Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by VFW post 191 and the American Legion post 902.

Enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren

Betty Virginia Cole, 92, of Washington, died Wednesday, September 4, 2013, in her home.

She was born November 1, 1920, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Harry and Jeanette Wilsman Casterline.

A homemaker, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, quilting and going to flea markets.

On March 29, 1941, she married Allen Thorne Cole Jr., who died August 26, 2003.

Surviving are five sons, Allen T. “Butch” (Linda) Cole of Washington, Terry Cole of Carteret, N.J., David Cole, Dale “Buck” (Barb) Cole and Patrick (Pam) Cole, all of Washington; a daughter, Kathleen (Harm) Hoffaker of Leavittsburg, Ohio; a brother, Vernon G. Casterline; a sister, Bonnie Jirles; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Deceased are a son, James “Ham” Cole; three sisters, Dorothy Albaugh, Linda Casterline and Grace McVeigh; and two brothers, Harry “Ed” Casterline and William Casterline.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Home Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 7. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.

Army veteran worked as a coal miner

Clarence R. “Killer” Gordon, 85, of Washington, died Tuesday, September 3, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

He was born July 4, 1928, in McConnells Mills, Chartiers Township, a son of the late Clarence R. Gordon Sr. and Alice Mull Gordon Thompson.

Mr. Gordon had worked as a coal miner and also worked for the former G.W. Peoples Railroad Construction Co. of Pittsburgh.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of IBPOE Lodge 6 of Washington.

Mr. Gordon loved his family and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren competing in sports. He also spent time at the casino, enjoyed gambling and shooting dice.

On November 20, 1952, he married Barbara Jean Patterson, who died May 13, 2005.

Surviving are seven children, Mary Porter (Lenny), Virginia McGlone, Letha Gordon (Gary Garrett), Bradford Gordon (Danielle), Clarence R. Gordon III (Brooke Taylor), Ruben Gordon (Betty) and Patricia Gordon, all of Washington; 22 grandchildren, James, Tiffanie, Justin, Ethan, Bradford Jr., Eden, Letha, Ruben Jr., Mya and Tajah Gordon, Richard and Wesley Lassic, Amber McGlone, Megan and Joseph Monroe, Thomas Jr. and Jaylin Kelly, Mina Haley, Kevin Heyman, DeQuay Isbell, Travis Crutcher and Austin Scott, all of Washington and Brandon of Florida; 23 great-grandchildren; a stepson, William Tyler of Washington; a sister, Sonya Bailey of Washington; a brother, John “Bake” Thomas of Washington; a special nephew, William Chandler of Washington; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a son, George Raymond Gordon and a grandson, James Edward Gordon.

Stephanie Ferralli Hasyn returned to her Lord August 31, 2013, after suffering a severe stroke.

She was born December 5, 1954, in Washington.

Deceased are her mother, Rose Leone-Ferralli and father, Peter Ferralli Sr., both of Washington, and twin sisters, Catherine and Rose.

Surviving are her husband, John Hasyn of Philadelphia; a son, Paul; daughter, Christye; brothers Peter Ferralli Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., Samuel Ferralli of Dayton, Ohio, and Stephan Ferralli, her twin, of Dunkirk, Md.; and their respective families.

She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Washington in 1972. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a certificate in Medical Technology from Washington Hospital and a MBA in Computer Science from Temple University.

Mrs. Hasyn was a member of the Italian Sons and Daughters of America, local Vittoria Lodge.

After the passing of her mother, she made sure that the family traditions were not forgotten. She would bake holiday cookies, sending them to her brothers every Christmas.

Theodore “Ted” W. Hrutkay, 76, of Bentleyville, died Thursday morning, September 5, 2013, in his home.

Avid Steelers fan

Robert A. Mass, 70, died September 4, 2013.

He was born in Washington, a son of the late Joseph Mass and Sarah Mass Perts. He was raised by his father and Irma Cindy Mass.

Mr. Mass was the father of Robert Buster Mass (Angie) and Randy Mass (Renee); grandfather of Rachael and Mariah Mass, all of Youngstown, Ohio; brother of Bunny Miller and the late Jimmy Mass; uncle of Toni (Shawn) and Faith, with whom he made his home. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

On November 5, 1964, he married Sharon Donahue, who survives.

He spent much of his life in Youngstown before moving back to Washington in 1986.

Mr. Mass was in the Pennsylvania and Ohio National Guard, being honorably discharged as an E5.

He was manager for Winkies, owned a Sohio service station and was a cook prior to his retirement.

Mr. Mass will be sadly missed, especially by the apple of his eye, Faith.

He unselfishly donated his body to the National Gift Registry. Services will be private.

Vietnam War veteran was avid fisherman

Curtis E. “Buddy” Patterson, 70, of Washington, died Wednesday, September 4, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

He was born April 9, 1943, in Washington, a son of Everett and Mary Kelley Patterson.

Mr. Patterson was a graduate of Avella High School. Following his graduation, he served four years with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

After his tour with the U.S. Army, he went to work for Kaiser Steel in San Bernardino, Calif.

He served as a pastor in Calexico, Calif., from 1968 to 1970, and from 1971 to 1973, he pastored in Kansas City, Mo. Following his time in Kansas City, he went to work as a supervisor, first for Packard Electric in Warren, Ohio, then for Volkswagen in New Stanton, until its closing and then for Chrysler in Twinsburg, Ohio, from where he retired.

He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge in Warren.

Mr. Patterson was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are seven children, Rebecca Carter (Brett) of Charlotte, N.C., Laura Montue (Terrance) and Lisa Croom (Kenneth), both of Pittsburgh, Curtis E. Patterson Jr. of Gulf Port, Miss., Christinia Bright (Michael) of Newark, N.J., and Karla Patterson-Bryant and Keysha Patterson, both of Biloxi, Miss.; a sister, Virginia Dockery of Cerritos, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are four brothers, John “Stump”, William “Wienie”, James and Frank Patterson; and five sisters, Evelyn Lacey, Margaret Patterson, Barbara Gordon, Mazie Dungee and M. Joanne Brown.

Avid volunteer was proud of her grandchildren

Bertha Jeanne Fleming Thomas, 83, of Charleroi, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013, in her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born March 29, 1930, in Charleroi, a daughter of the late Dave and Velma Jones Fleming.

Mrs. Thomas was married to William Thomas, former Charleroi police chief, on December 28, 1965, who passed away March 5, 1977.

She graduated from Charleroi High School in 1948

Mrs. Thomas worked her entire life for Bell Telephone and AT&T as an operator in traffic, in the business offices and finally as a sales representative.

In retirement, she successfully operated an eBay business until the time of her death.

She was a member of First Christian Church of Charleroi, the Pioneer Club of AT&T and a driver for the Charleroi Meals on Wheels program for over 12 yrs. “Gramster,” as she would come to be known, volunteered countless hours assisting the many organizations her grandchildren participated in. Over the years, thousands of pepperoni rolls would be made for numerous team events.

She was an avid fan of Charleroi and Bentworth athletics and attended all of her grandchildren’s many sporting and social events.

She truly loved her Charleroi Legion Baseball and rooting for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Surviving are a son, David Kurowsky (Joy) of Charleroi; a daughter, Carleen Jones (Barry) of Ellsworth; and the pride of her life, her grandchildren, Matt Kurowsky (Brittany), Jeff Jones, Rachel Jones Behanna (Justin) and Brad Kurowsky; and great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Elijah and Landon Kurowsky. Also surviving are her much loved Fort Lauderdale family, her brother, Fred Fleming and her nieces and nephew, Laurie Rowley, Carrie Cromartie and Scott Fleming.

She will also be greatly missed by her loving yellow Lab, Chloe.

By request of the deceased, a public viewing will not occur. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 7, in Schrock-Hogan Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi. Robert Frank Wolanski Sr., 72, of Burgettstown, Hanover Township, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013, in his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born November 2, 1940, in Clinton, a son of the late Stephen and Mary Ezarik Wolanski.

Mr. Wolanski retired from the Laborers Local Union 833 in New Brighton.

He enjoyed horseshoes, bocce, motorcycles, poker and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Maxine Emler Wolanski; a son, Robert F. Wolanski Jr. of Burgettstown; a daughter, Melissa Preston of Francis Mine; five grandchildren, Taira McBee, Harley and Hali Wolanski, and Landon and Isiah Preston; six sisters, Betty Cox of Burgettstown, Pat Cox of Burgettstown, Dorothy Cox of McGuffy, Ohio, Irene Waitrak of Clinton, Susan Kiger of Florida and Deloris Roy of Weirton, W.Va.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his companion, Karen Blank; and five brothers, Joe, Herman, Steve, Tom and Phil Wolanski.

To honor Mr. Wolanski’s wishes, there will be no public visitation and a memorial service will be announced at a later time. Arrangements are under the direction of Lee & Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown.
